    Diarrhea on Walks

In the last month or so since the weather has gotten nicer, Oliver and I have been doing morning walks before I go to work. Three weeks ago when my husband went to 2nd shift, Oliver and I bumped our walks up to twice a day. Once before work and once after work. Well, in the last week or so, he has started getting diarrhea on our walks. He never has even attempted to eliminate (pee or poo) before on our walks. I understand that (from what I have read) exercise causes bowel movements but if he wasn't doing it before, why has he started now? If it were the solid poop he has before we leave for our walk, I wouldn't be complaining because that makes for an easy clean up and it's just nasty when people don't clean up after their dogs BUT have you tried cleaning up runny poop??? It is not easy to do....Since he just started doing it, will he grow out of it or do I just need to carry plastic bags with me for every walk and clean up as best as I can?

I would bring a fecal to the vet.

Why? It is just on walks and I have read that the last poop hasn't been in the body long enough to get firm and that it is pretty common.

A poop sample to the vet just to make sure nothing else is going on. Probably not. May just be the excitement of going on a walk. Try putting a tablespoonful of pumpkin in his meal to give him some fiber. Also, make sure his walks are at least 30-45 minutes after a meal, or go before a meal.

I had to laugh a bit when I read this. I've had a couple instances with runny poo's, and I walked them with a 3 gallon bucket of water to wash it away with. You do whatcha gotta do!!!

Is it mushy turds or straight diarrhea? If its mushy hes just more than likely pushing out a poop, my corgi does the same thing. Kinda annoying. The walk poop is always her 3rd poop of the day and its never real solid

I agree with the fecal. Although excitement can cause softer poops, it shouldn't be diarrhea (the one you can't scoop with a plastic bag). Have you changed his food recently?

I agree that if it is so loose you cannot pick it up with a bag then it needs investigating. Even if you didn't see it happen he could be eating stuff he shouldn't. Or breathing in stuff he shouldn't. Plus, he's a baby yet, his bowel habits could easily still change. That loose for a week, even following a solid poop, is worrisome.

Some people carry water on walks. Mostly it's for drinking, but ......

I guess I should be more specific...it started on a walk we had a week ago. We've went on 5 walks since then and he did the mushy poop on the first 3 of the 5. He hasn't done it the last 2. I think it was just excitement poop because I made sure he was more calm when we went on the last 2 walks.
