    Mulder update

Thanks for all the good thoughts - please keep them coming!

The seizures seem to have stopped for now - he hasn’t had any since Saturday. We’re holding off for now on medicating him for them, but have started him on cholodin which *might* help and would certainly be easier on the body. I had planned on calling the vet on Monday to talk about medicating him, but I just had a feeling on Sunday that he was done with them, so decided to hold off a bit. The meds can be very damaging to aging organs, and he has a history of clustering and then spacing out for a time, so we are hoping that this cluster is done with. If he does seizure again, we will of course be calling the vet immediately.

He is still VERY weak - can’t get up on his own. If we get him up, he can walk a little but doesn’t have good balance and tires quickly. His bladder control is not great either. BUT - he is still mentally alert, doesn’t seem to be in pain and is if anything hungrier than usual. Still hasn’t lost interest in sniffing Chloe’s behind, either.

From what I’ve read, this type of weakness following seizures usually indicates that the seizure was in the motor cortex and is not at all unheard of - it is usually transient and passes with in a few days. His seems to be lasting longer but at his advanced age, it’s not surprising that he isn’t bouncing back as quickly as a younger person/dog would. So for now, we’re keeping him comfortable and hoping that as time passes he will gain strength. I’ve read that some dogs can take 2 weeks to recover from seizures (usually they are showing mental signs, not physical) so I’m willing to give him a chance.

what a guy! glad he's still interested in sniffing Cloe! sounds like he just needs a bit more time to recover, those must be hard on a young dog, never mind someone Mulder's age. and prayers that he doesn't have another round.

Not sure if this was mentioned but have you considered going gluten free (celiac disease) to see if the seizures stop? From what I read years ago with this issue - the gluten builds up in the brain because the body can not break down gluten and the seizure is the bodies way of ridding itself of the gluten in the brain. Just a thought and worth a try. Praying he gets his strength back.

www.dogtorJ.com has info on his site. Here is a story about a GSD (granted this dog was much worse than Mulder with seizures) but it is worth the read and some food for thought.

Epilepsy- The Dietary Solution « DogtorJ.com :: Food Intolerance in Pets & Their People :: Home of The GARD

Scroll down to the paragraph that starts with: (about half way down the page) to read the story of the GSD

"Then, in walked the glaring example. He was number eighteen on the roster of epileptics".......

He hasn’t been gluten free because of treats, but he has been on a grain (and gluten) free kibble for years so I doubt it’s that. Since they didn’t start until he turned 14, it is most likely some sort of structural irregularity in the brain such as a brain tumor, scarring from a mini-stroke, etc ... good thought, though!
