    Food for hummingbird feeder

    What do you use?

I was using some store-bought stuff and just ran out... the lil guy (or girl) is pestering me to refill his feeder! Who has a good recipe?

Sugar and water. Better for them anyway, they don't need to eat red dye.

I thought it was usually just sugar and water, maybe some red dye to make it more appealing?

we keep a feeder at work, and the pretty little things fight over it! Its got the glass jar on top of the red 4-station "flying saucer" feeding area, the jar is about 8" tall I'd guess. I just use distilled water from the cooler, and plain old white sugar. About 35 packets, so about 35 teaspoons, or 3/5 cups (I was guessing about a half cup, but turns out its 0.7 of a cup!) , no colouring added.

They hover in front of the window if it gets empty, and they "fight" about who gets to feed - the loser goes and sits on the nearby chainlink fence till the victor is finished. Watching their aerial dogfights is impressive!

No need for the Red Dye. It's something they don't need in their systems and does little or nothing to attract them. For us it's always been just 2 heaping TBSP of sugar into a cup of warm water.

My parents, who have several feeders and a gazillion hummingbirds, swear by one cup of sugar to two cups of water.

    Flowers ;-)

Hot Lips Salvia, I put them on the deck each year and my sister plants about 10 bushes around the house. We both have lots of hummingbirds every year

Couple pics from out on the deck. They come up there while I am right by them, they don't care too rich a reward. Hemi can even be laying right next to the flowers.

We use a 4:1 ratio, for example 1 cup of water to 1/4 cup of sugar. We make up to 4 cups and keep it in a glass jar the fridge.

We're keeping an eye on our feeder so we can report our first sighting to Ontario Hummingbird Watch. The link takes you to a map of this years' first sightings.

Just waiting for the weather to warm up a little above the darn 30's we're having to put out the feeder. I am assuming they are not here yet, maybe I'm wrong?
