I think my boy takes notes of all the smells and reports them to some doggy data base in the cloud when I'm not around.
Chopper makes this sucking noise through his nose when he's on a scent. It is almost like he is taking in an extra large sample of air to analyze its contents. I call it puppy radar. Have you guys experienced this sound?

Finnegan makes pig noises when he gets going on a scent.
Maxx definitely makes some strange noises when he is really focused on a scent. I found his "noises" to be of great help while doing nosework and tracking classes with him!

Both my dogs have teeny snuffs but at the speed of a machine gun. You can see the side slits in their nostrils almost vibrate it's so fast.
I know exactly what your talking about Gibson did that often. I hadn't noticed it in my previous labs.
We call Mardi Miss Piggy. She absolutely snorts when on a scent.

Sunshine has more of a 'Thunk, Thunk, Thunk, is short secession. I always figures she is taking many very short sniffs, to narrow down where what she is looking for has been.
Head goes down, flag goes up! She runs around rapidly, in back and forth sweeps. By the sound, it seems she is taking a sniff every foot or maybe sixteen inches. If she catches scent of something, she is usually two steps past where it was before her brain catches up. She turns on a dime, head still down and goes back to zero in on it.
For me, it is intriguing that they can pick up on the most current scent trail of an object, in spite of all the other trails put down that day. Example: Hide and Seek. I can hide an object many, many times and she will still follow the trail (of me or the object) of the new trail, and ignore the one set down just minutes before during the last game.
Yep. Sometimes, I think Lola is going to pull a nail out of the deck or get a splinter up her nose. ;-)
