Dugan can't hear me call him back when we're on a walk, but can wake up from a sound sleep and come waltzing in, when I, very quietly, peel a banana three rooms away from him!!!
He knows when I'm low or not feeling well, and stays with me, until a banana is unpeeled!
He disappears when I'd like to give him a shower, (a very rare occurrence), no matter how I try to trick him. He's very fast for a 12 year old.
There are lots more, but I ask him how he does those things, and I either get a stare, wet tongue, back to sleep or "Where is the banana?" look.

Labs are very smart, lol! I think hearing a banana peel, while sound asleep and other intuitive powers are deeply bred in to them.

LOL, so true!
We've yet to figure out how Archie knows when we are finished with dinner. Like a good boy, without any commands, he opts to stay in the living room while we eat and can't see us. We've tried all types of routines when we finish, but dang he shows up the minute the last bite is made. Definitely not complaining.

LOL, here's a spin for you. You can use that banana to check his hearing as he ages. Many if not most dogs do lose their hearing in old age. If he fails the banana test you'll know he's not faking it.

My first Lab, Ella, could be sound asleep upstairs in our house, and my wife would quietly go into the kitchen and get a banana, come back into the living room and sit down. No sign of the dog. The second she'd crack open the banana, there was Ella, sitting in front of her, waiting for her piece. Never could figure out how she did it.

Actually, I think I'll change that. They can probably smell the banana as much as hear it. What I did was drop a cornflake into the metal food dish. I started doing that when my sister told me how deaf her dog was getting. Jet passed the cornflake test and came running up from the depths of the basement. But a year later she didn't.
They have uncanny powers! Mocha lets us sleep in on the weekends, thank goodness! But I swear he can hear my eyes open. As soon as I become alert he stands up, shakes, yawns & starts banging the kennel with his tail, daddy I'm up too, lets get the day started!
He can be sound asleep on the couch & our cat can peep around the corner of the family room & he is full awake and in chase mode.

Whenever I get a piece of cheese (baby-bel with crinkly wrapper), Cooper comes running. If Stacey has a piece of the same type of cheese, Cooper just lays there. He knows who the sucker is.
I keep thinking Max is loosing his hearing. Sometimes, I have to go touch him to wake him up. But then I will unwrap a cheese slice a room or two away from him and will he will appear right next to me before I can finish unwrapping the cheese, same if I'm opening a box of cereal. He might just have selective hearing.
