How do you exercise your high energy Lab in the heat

Swimming is the obvious one to me but I don't always have time to go to the beach. I think Hope got a little over heated on Tuesday.

He doesn't seem to need as much exercise in the heat. Oban seems to feel the heat more than any other dog I've had though.

My boys are pretty mellow in the heat. In the morning and evening they will romp in the yard and then cool off in the kiddie pool. That's about it. I often walk them around 5am during the week when it's cooler and the sidewalk won't burn their feet.

Both of mine hate the heat. We'll go outside, and they will do their business, maybe a little bitey face, then they want back in the house. If it's really hot, I'll take them out about dusk and throw some bumpers, then let them run around as much as they want. Then we will do our walk around the neighborhood.

Luckily neither of them needs massive amount of exercise.

One other thing I do when it's miserable hot, is some obedience work and tricks in the house. Making them use their brains will also wear them out.

Walks really early and at dusk; lots of training games in the air conditioned house; food dispensing games. Oh, and I had a freezer mold that could be used to make big rings. I'd fill it with watered down broth and some kibble and make ice rings for her. A baby pool is a good way to cool her down.

We do hit the park every evening when it cools down. I just taught her to belly crawl this week( which is hilarious to me) so I also say work on some new tricks.

it's hard. luckily my dogs do ok at just sitting back a bit more in the heat (they don't deal with it well).

we walk early in the morning and later in the evening. Luckily my yard may not be huge but it has a good breeze even when it's warm so we do very short fetch sessions and the pool is there for her to cool off (she won't want to fetch much in the heat anyway).

And lots of mental stimulation and maybe some indoor fetch.

Team up with the neighbors and their kids - when it cools down in the evening (which happens even on hot days in our location), we'll get together with the dogs and the kids and let them all run out their cooped up energy together.

oh indoor playdates! they dont' have as much room but a bit of an indoor wrestles goes a long way.

Trips to stores that allow dogs for extra stimulation (works the brain)
