    A very close call!

When I let Kimber out last night for a final potty, she started charging around the yard with her mouth open, snorting, like she does when she catches scent of a critter in the yard. We have a ton of deer, groundhogs, and rabbits, so there's plenty for her to chase. I swept the flashlight around the yard at deer level; nope, no eye reflections. So then I scanned ground level, but didn't see anything. Kimber was sniffing the ground and then juked to the side, so I flashed the light over there: and there was a skunk! I was shocked because I hadn't detected a scent at all, and I was probably just 8 feet from it. THANK ALL THE GODS that Kimber stopped a few feet short of it when she saw it and when I said, "In the house! Now!" she listened to me. She got sprayed about 3.5 years ago so perhaps she remembered the nastiness?

I got her up on the porch and did a quick sniff test to confirm she hadn't gotten sprayed before letting her into the house. She got much praise and treats for obeying my command. DH went out to try and find the skunk because it hadn't seemed scared of us, and we've had a handful of rabid racoons and skunks in the area. He didn't find it, so hopefully it was just as startled to see us as we were to see it and skedaddled. But I'll be taking Kimber out on leash after dark for a while!

    Good girl,Kimber.
We always take Mocha out for his last TT poo poo on a leash for just that reason. Haven't seen a sign of a skunk but we do have a gallon of Natures Miarical on hand just in case!

    Good Girl Kimber!

Skunks don't smell unless they have sprayed and so glad it was not on Kimber. They do give a warning, stamping of the front feet but who could hear that in the grass.

I take mine on leash, in the yard, at night for this very reason. Kimber was a GOOD girl!

My worst nightmare. So glad it was only a close call.
