    Pet Insurance

I signed Sophie and Bruce up for pet insurance today. I had never really thought much about, but after being on this board for the past two years, and seeing all the potential issues I could run into, I figured I'd be stupid not to. My vet recommended PetPlan, which I know many others here have. I was really surprised at how reasonable it is, and the amount of things covered.

I think it just came down to the fact I love my dogs, and I really don't want to have to make a decision affecting their care based on if I can pay for or not.

Petplan is great. You made the right decision IMO. Petplan paid about $2800 our of the $3500 for Niner's elbow surgery (80% specialist and $200 deductible). They also paid 100% of the $670.00 ER bill when he was vomiting continuously. We used to have 100% coverage, but we recently dropped to 80% since that is what is paid if you see a specialist anyway.

Great decision! I got Archie insured with Trupanion about 6 months ago, and even though I've never had to use it, I never feel bad seeing the money go every month.

I have PetPlan on Ellie as well and pleased with the coverage. I had VPI on Maisey and Ace 10 years or more ago - back when they were one of only 2 complanies offering pet insurance. I know not everyone thinks pet insurance is a great idea, and I can certainly see the logic of just setting money aside for an emergancy, but I also know myself and my life and money gets set aside and then spent on some other emergancy. I like the peace of mind of knowing if something happens I don't have to let finances make my decision. I never, not once, had to use the insurance of Maisey. Ace on the other had got stung by a wasp on the muzzle on two separate occasiona, both requring injections of epinephrine because the swelling was cutting off his airway. He ate rat poison one night and had to get his stomach pumped because it wasn't the warfarin type of rat poison but the neurotoxic kind. He also ate some wild mushrooms and developed liverfailure. His medical issues more than covered the cost of his insurance. Heck it covered Maisey's insurance as well. I dropped both their insurances when they were around 6 as the premiums to cover them as they got older were going up and at that point were rather high and I felt more comfortable about covering chronic illnesses as they weren't having too many accidents at that age. For us, it's a good product.

I have Healthy Paws and am very pleased. That said, I bought it for the same reason as OP - I don't ever want to have to worry about my girls' care based on finances.
Although Healthy Paws have been excellent with my small claims, I hope I never have to make a major claim.

Yes, the $1k I paid today for tooth and other issues was a lot easier to swallow knowing I'd only pay about 10% of that.

I have Trupanion for Roxy and have used it a lot, even though she's only a year old. I don't want money to ever be a deciding factor when it comes to her care and, as we all know, veterinary care is expensive.

I got a reminder of this recently. Just in the past month, my mom has spent over $5,000 on her dog's care since she was diagnosed with kidney disease. The bills add up fast.

We have VPI. They respond quickly but I'm not thrilled with what they pay, they excluded Zo's ED and our rates just went up.
