Conformation peeps, what do you think?

Bruce at 17 months. I really haven't considered showing him, but I think he looks really good. I'd love some opinions from those who do show.

IMO you should take him out and put him in front of judges at all-breed shows. If he moves well, I think there are judges in those venues who may reward him. As long as you keep it fun for him and you are enjoying yourself, what do you have to lose?

I would try it. Or maybe there are some matches nearby where you can try and learn and see what folks say in a non-competitive manner.
He's very different from Jagger. I love his reach of neck. He's not a big hairy bear like Jagger! LOL

Bruce is still a bit out of coat right now, especially evident in his tail. And it's funny you should mention Jagger as a hairy bear, I have friends who live in Denver and they have two black Labs, and both of them have coats like Jagger. I've never seen Labs with coats as heavy and thick as these dogs, must be those Colorado winters!!!!!

I think I may try to find some local shows and see what happens. I didn't really consider showing him until I saw him in these pics, I've always thought he was a bit long in leg, but when I looked at the pics, I felt he looked nicely balanced, with a very nice neck/shoulder flow into a nice topline. He moves well too.

Personally, I think he’s very nice! I agree with Daos (hope I spelled that right!) that he might do better at all-breed shows though. I think the judges at Specialties (at least the ones I’ve been to) prefer a dog with the appearance of more “substance” even at that age - and at Bruce’s age he might still have some filling out to do. Mulder kept filling out until he was about 4. He has nice angulation and is very well balanced and athletic looking (in my opinion).

Also, there has been a bit of a push for a more moderate dog since the LRC's letter last year about "fat labs".

Jagger's coat is definitely his genes vs. the environment. My chocolate IN coat look like Jagger when he's OUT. We're getting the new black puppy next month, it will be interesting to see how her coat compares since I am new dealing with black.

The Lab Club of the Potomac is having a bare bones show in October I think. I would find out when and see if you can get down there. You should be able to meet some breeders that can help you evaluate him. Potomac is known for gathering the "bigger" labs (size and reputation) but the barebones should be a bit more "local".

In addition to Potomac, you could also come up to the Mid-Jersey Specialty in October (probably about the same distance for you) to have people take a look and while you are there, stop by Obedience to say hi!

September 25-26 LRCP has supported entries for Warrenton Kennel Club, followed by their barebones on the 27th with Old Dominion Kennel Club, so you've got three days of judging in sweeps and regular classes by Lab breeders. Probably a three hour drive to get to the showgrounds in Northwestern Virginia from Delaware. More info here: The Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac, Inc.

Also, you might want to consider trying a UKC show first. Not that there's much competition, but they're usually a friendly place for young dogs to get used to the show ring.
