Need some training tips for Tucker - 9 1/2 week old.

I'm starting to get Tucker use to a leash. He does ok inside with treats in pocket but doesn't want any part of it outside. Any suggestions?

Also, I would say about 50% of the time he is good about coming to me inside of the house especially with treats. He gets easily distracted outside and I must shorten the distance. Are there any tricks to getting him to come to me? Should I start using a long leash outside yet? Right now its fun and games with treats in pocket. Just wondering what is the best next step. Thanks!

he"s a baby! recall takes lots and lots of tiem and training. You need to be more exiting then what he's doing or just calmly go pick him up and redirect (if he's doing something he shouldn't). Use a high pitch voice, and have a toy you can play with to make yourself more intresting.

Let him drag a leash outside. he's a bit young for formal walks as it is so that he's ok in the house is a good start.

I HIGHLY recommend puppy classes. they are safe for pupies at that age and help a great deal with socialisatino and cover all teh basic issue with puppies.

Sounds like you're on the right track. It takes time and consistency. I completely agree with puppy classes when he's had all his vaccinations. The classes are as much for you as for your puppy. I think I learned more than Mocha!

We also put a drag lead on Mocha. I think it helped him get used to the leash and it also helped when we had to catch him when his recall didn't work so well.

I agree with Tanya about taking a puppy class. I plan on signing Bruce up as soon as he has all his shots. Also as Tanya said, they are babies, and it will take a while for anything to stick. Training really is a journey that never ends. I still work with Sophie every day on items she struggles with.

one thing I love about the companionship I am developing with chili is that he remembers stuff. So please dont be in a rush and just be consistent so your pup can learn and grow with you. Safety was one of my biggest concerns as Chili gets into everything without supervision and I would feel horrible if he ate something that could kill him. my point is just take it slow and enjoy the ride.

I agree with everyone about going to puppy classes. It is a great bonding experience and will help withy all of the basics. Find a place that uses positive reinforcement methods. Have you heard of clicker training? In the beginning I focused on just getting mine to look at me when I said her name. I'd say "Daisy", as soon as she looked at me I would click with the clicker and then treat.

Thank you all for the advice. I will enjoy the ride and not get so caught up on pushing the training. Can anyone recommend classes? The best I would do is google search my area and I know petsmart offers classes. Not sure I'm a fan of the Petsmart classes unless someone has good reviews.

I have no idea where are (even with the location listed on the left). Your best bet is to call your vet, and ask other dog owners in your area.Don't be shy to talk to people on the street. You can absolutely ask to audit a class or go meet the trainers before signing up for classes.

Did you find a puppy Kindergarten class? I have heard good things about the classes at my local petsmart, but I have met the trainer many times and I prefer my trainer (At a privately owned facility). The local petsmart trainer has kind of a hodge-podge of techniques, some very positive methods and other methods that are based on the wolf-pack theory (which I don't agree with). She is a retired teacher that now trains dogs. I don't know what qualifications petsmart expects from their trainers but I think each petsmart is different and you might want to meet the instructor in person before signing up. Puppy Kindergarten is GREAT socialization though so definitely look into it.
The other thing you might want to look at is your local shelter. Ours human society offers great training classes.
I am a newbie dog owner and I've learned so much about my dog through training and it really helped us bond. It's going to be really rewarding and fun!

I'm pretty limited in my area, unless I want to drive and hour or more. I took Sophie to Petsmart for intermediate and advanced training, and I thought it was pretty good. I liked the trainer as she wasn't married to Petsmarts doctrine, she worked with me to formulate a plan to help me with some issues I was having with Sophie. The advanced class was great as we were the only ones in the class, so it was like private lessons. I'd say visit your Petsmart and talk with the trainer and see what you think.
