    Stupid Dog Tricks

What tricks have you taught your dogs? RD taught herself to sit up and beg. We're working on Roll Over. She is so food-motivated she's pretty easy to bait. But then again, RD is everything-motivated... birds, praise, cookies, toys, whatever.

I was bored the other day so I trained Murph to "shake right" and "shake left" (aka give paw, but we refer to it as shake)

He's pretty good with it too about 98% of the time. He learned roll over about 2 months ago and that's still going strong.

We're working on stay right now (which he thinks is stupid ), but I really want to teach him to play dead LOL

Do you mean play dead like with his feet in the air?

Nobody taught him this, but Cooper and the cat work together to sneak food out of cupboards and off the table. Not a good 'trick' to do.

I'm bad. The only "tricks" I teach are things useful to me. When Kanzi was a baby, she had a shoe fetish so I turned it into a job. Would tell her to "go get my shoe" (or slipper). She'd bring one, then I'd tell her to "Go get the other". Happily!!! So for a Halloween party at Rally class (she was 6mos old and had finished her RN title already), that's what I used for our "trick" and couldn't believe all the people who thought that was "amazing!". LOL. I guess I did have one who liked to do a "High Five" but again, it was because SHE was obnoxious about it, so I opted to put a command to it instead of having her offer it constantly.

I use everything for training or I take something they love to do and shape it.

Bring me shoes/slippers - since they carry them around anyway.
Bounce - many dogs like to do it, can be used as a reward in training and gets them excited.
Back up - useful for a foldback down, no creeping forward for drop on recall.
Touch - I use painters tape so I can put it on anything anywhere - go outs or shutting drawers/cupboards/doors.
Spin both ways - another fun reward like bounce.
Go out and run around something (cone, chair, etc.) - used for various training games.
    Get in a box/on a mat/on a platform - used for training position.
Take TP roll off holder - something I shaped from a 'bad' habit.
Pick up anything - they do it anyway so I shaped it.

Along those lines. I'd like to do the one where you shoot the dog and they fall over (like sheltieluver described)

He may still be too young though. He still needs to learn his stay and then we can move on to other tricks

I don't teach any trick but I my old girl taught herself to go to the basement every night and bring up a can of dog food at feeding time. I sure saved me some steps.
