I think the friends you can make doing dogs are different than maybe any others. What a wonderful tribute.
Our weather has been holding so I have been working M fairly hard building new concepts and skills. We have introduced poison birds, bull dogs, under the arch blinds and marks, more cold blinds, retired guns and triples. She has handled most of these very well. I think the indented mark has been the hardest for her. She needs more experience running past the gunner.
Today was very special 3 dog clubs each with a different focus gathered to remember M"s dam and her owner, Marvin Calhoun. Both were killed in a horrific accident a little over a year ago. M's dam, Willow was buried here on the farm. So today the Muskoka Kennel Club placed a stone with an engraving on Marv and Willow on it. The engraving was done from the last picture taken of them a week before the accident. The Georgian Bay HRC club placed a bench with a plaque dedicated to Marv and Willow next to the slab. Both face up the hill towards where Willow is buried. The York Field Trial Retriever Club have dedicated a trophy in Marv's name. It is give for the Junior ( Derby Stake ) to the amateur handler and dog that display great team work and sportsmanship. It is not necessary to be the winner of the stake only to display the qualities that Marv held so dear.
We started the day throwing some marks for all the dogs, then dedicated the site and finished up with a chili lunch topped off with coconut cream pie Marv's favourite. Everyone got to share memories of Marv and it was just a special day.
One Marv's stone is a saying he always had for those that had lost their companions, " Bury them in your heart". Marv is buried in many of our hearts as seem by the number of clubs that have paid him honour. He and Willow may be gone but they are certainly not forgotten.
