helping an anxious dog settle in

So, I have an older, overweight, chocolate here for the week with me while her owner is on vacation. In her own home she is totally mellow, but since she's been here she seems very anxious and is having a hard time settling in. She mostly just can't relax, milling about, panting, and a little whining. Poor Ol' Sweetie!!! Are there any things I can do to make her feel more at home? Or will this all pass in a day or two?

It'll likely pass. Have you taken her on some leashed walks (I would not be taking her off-leash)? Sometimes that makes things worse, but sometimes better. Worth a try.

I haven't taken her for any walk because she's pretty arthritic in her old age. She can't do the stairs up to my bedroom so I'll likely be sleeping on the couch downstairs.

A five or ten minute walk might be OK? Does she have any pain killers?

Give it about 24 hours. It always seems to be more stressful on the older pups when their environment changes.

Poor old soul. Keep her on a regular schedule and set aside a place for her to be by herself but can see you so she has her "safe place". Take some quiet time with her, just petting and talking. She'll settle down.

Thanks everyone! She already seems happier. She's on the couch with me now snoozing! She does have some meds. But, I think with her weight they only do so much. If she were my dog I'd get at least 15 lbs off of her. aye aye aye
