Achillles was certainly signaling to the cat that it should make itself scarce! Gooood Achilles!
Our backyard is a songbird-friendly area. Achilles and Stella care very little about the birds so we can let them out and the birds do their thing. We do not have a cat and if we did it would be an inside cat. Neighbourhood cats are not encouraged to visit our backyard.
Faye and I ran errands Sunday afternoon and when we returned, we let Achilles and Stella into the backyard. A short time later, because it was a lovely day, we took seats in our Adirondack chairs out in the sun.
Achilles circled the Norway maple near the deck. He would move, circle, look up, occasionally squeak or let out a controlled whine. Since we feed birds, squirrels clean up seed leavings so they visit throughout the day. While Achilles runs the squirrels up the trees he never obsesses over them, so this was odd behaviour. Here's an example of how attentive he was.
I looked up, and in a crotch a way up the tree, a close look revealed a trespasser.
Gooooood boy, Achilles.
All of us went inside about two hours later. A check a short time after that confirmed kitty was gone. I hope kitty learned that it enters our backyard at its risk.

Archie here: Good job Achilles! We know how important it is to keep those cat away from the birds in our yard. Unfortunately, I also like to warn off the squirrels and birds.

I said that Achilles runs the squirrels up the trees. He's so jaded that a squirrel must be only a few feet away before he'll stir himself.
It's very, very doubtful he would intentionally harm a cat. He'd pounce on and bat at our indoor cat Zaida but went no farther than that.
Archie: Achilles asked me to thank you. We're in this together, you know.

Way to go Achilles. The cat was probably on a recon mission.

Yep. It's neat that Chili likes spending time outside. Since he does not dig, bark unnecessarily, or otherwise very rarely be a nuisance (though since he finds the compost pile attractive we have to ensure the garden gate is closed), he's reliable outside on his own. A good guard dog.
