Has Anyone Here Taken the AKC Judging Seminar Yet?

I think there will be one in the Portland area and I'm determined to try to get the credential and go through the apprenticeships. Mainly I want to be able to help my club out if they have trouble filling assignments. And as a handler I want to be better able to see things from the judges' points of view.

My friends who have taken the seminar in the past said the exam at the end had fairly ambiguous questions. I'd be somewhat disappointed if I drove 400 miles for the seminar and then flunked the test.

Has anyone here done it yet? (And, I do have the rule book and intend to study it in advance.)

I did years ago. 2004 probably. I found the test was simple -- I was only applying for JH at the time but qualified to judge SH by virtue of title (no further written required at that time) a couple years later. Open book at the time....
I think the requirement still stands that you must have run at least one test and Q'd at the level you are applying for. Should not be difficult if you ran a dog.

Oh yeah... I had forgotten that.

That could be a problem. Having just retired I am only just beginning to run my own dogs in HT's. (I've done it quite a bit in training.) Last season I ran my MH in Senior to just get over the nerves and learn not to make boneheaded mistakes (like pointing the gun at the judges... which is something I did. They carried me anyway.) So, I will need to handle my dogs more AND find a way to get the apprenticeship done.

The plan is to run Ram Jet Rocket Dog in Senior this coming season, we skipped Junior. She's not a dog we can campaign every weekend. She would come unglued. So even if things went perfectly, it'll be well into the summer before I can put a title on her.

Oh, well. One thing at a time.

Your Q w/ the MH dog at the SH test may carry you to the SH judge's level. Believe it or not, that's all AKC used to require (personally, I disagree w/ that as I've seen a lot of judges set up some incredibly bad tests that didn't have the training/handling experience). It's amazing what you pick up on after training / running a few dogs and I suppose that's also why they pair young/new judges w/ level 8's too, but still...

There are still a few judges that I avoid because their ability to set up a good test escapes them. My biggest pet peeve is when JH judges set up a cheating water test. Talk about undoing your training.

Oh, yeah! I agree. The first ever Junior I watched was on a round pond and they used just the edge of it. A clear path to and from the bird on land, though most dogs at least got wet because the line was so close to the edge the the toes of the handlers' shoes were practically in the water.

If I can just help out my club... that would be incentive enough. And the folks in my club know who NOT to invite to judge. So God willing, I'll always be working with someone saltier than me.

The venue relies on a ton of volunteers, period. I've driven 130 miles each way just to marshal tests when I've not had dogs to run. There are always ways to pitch in. I never did pursue judging since there are so many in the Seattle area much closer for the clubs (ie no mileage or hotel costs), but found the judging seminar and process very useful regardless. Can't remember now what it cost but like anything else, if you take away a few good morsels of info at the end of the day, it's worth it.

I have taken the seminar twice. It is good. It will help you to be a better handler even ir you dont judge.

I keep going to Entryexpress and they continue to be "not finalized". I THINK there is an associated handling seminar. I checked the mileage and it is 525 miles from where I live. But particularly if we're working dogs and seeing how judging is applied "in real life", I think it will be worth it.

Have you checked directly w/ the club offering it? That's how I signed up in the past.
