Good job Hoku! A solid recall is invaluable. Keep up the training.
So, we have two older / elderly cats: an 8 year old who should be healthier than he is (but his eating disorder has caused some difficulties) and a 17 year old who holds his ground but also weighs perhaps 6 lbs, wet.
We keep them and Hoku separated most of the time. Our basement is built out, 1000 sq', and so they have that when she's home. they have the rest of the house during the day, when she's gone, and at night.
Anyway. Hoku isn't aggressive, but she's big and interested and happy. And I worry about that big happiness bouncing up against slightly frail cats.
Tonight, we were feeding the cats, and one, the 8 year old, came upstairs. Hoku saw him and bounced bounced toward him. He wasn't expecting it. Off they went into the dining room. I yelled:
"HOKU! COME!"
She ran right in! She wasn't on an aggressive chase, but was definitely on "I'm going to play with cat right now, this is fun!" Again, I have no fear of her harming the cat, but the cat is frail, and we are still working on good calm interaction.
But she ran right in. Front and center. Luckily, I had some boiled chicken at hand, and so was able to reward with praise and nice high-value reward.
So happy to have been doing this training. Really wasn't sure how she'd do on a recall with her mind distracted. This was a good test.
Good job Hoku! A solid recall is invaluable. Keep up the training.
