    Training Books?

Does anyone have any suggestions for some good, easy-to-understand dog/puppy training books? (I'm looking for books that also explain the "why"s as well... something that will go a little into the psychology/pack mentality of dogs, as well.)

    Thanks!

These two are my go to's:
Culture Clash: Jean Donaldson: 9781617811128: Amazon.com: Books

The Other End of the Leash: Why We Do What We Do Around Dogs: Patricia B. McConnell: 9780345446787: Amazon.com: Books

My friend is looking at taking a trainer training program. The reading for the first module is as follows:
    Mandatory Reading Material:
Excel-erated Learning: Explaining in English How Dogs Learn and How Best to TeachThem, by Pamela j. Reid, Ph. D
The Culture Clash, by Jean Donaldson
Donʼt Shoot the Dog, by Karen Pryor

Recommended Reading Material:Calming Signals, by Turid Ruugas

Note: I haven't read those books other than culture clash. i actually just picked up don't shoot the dog from teh library today.

Thanks, I'll look into those! And do you happen to know what training program he/she is looking at?

Another good book: How to Behave So Your Dog Behaves | Dr. Sophia Yin, DVM, MS

the local training schools are offering program to help "train the trainer" but with the goal of also preparing people to take the test to be certified

here is an example of their course (and you can click for all teh details). Best Friends Dog Training s Program
you can click for a pretty detailed explanation of the course. It's split up and the goal is to take (and hopefully pass) the certified dog training exam. i'll have to check which one. there are a few.

If you have any dog training schools nearby you can see if they have a program.

I have had several copies of one called How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With Rutherford and Neil. Keep lending it and no one ever returns it. Rule now is buy your own copy.

Loved that book with our first dog. We too loaned it out and never got it back!

Has anyone used the book, Total Recall by Pippa Mattinson? If so, did you find it helpful?

I read "know your dog" by Dr David Sands (book is out of the U.K.) I got it hard bound for $3 at an outlet store in my area. I liked this book because it was simple enough to read, had good concepts and wasn't overly wordy.

a friend lent me a copy of "control unleashed-the puppy program" it's pretty lengthy (250 pages) but appears to have some great training tips and training techniques based on research.
