    Working with TWO dogs?

Just an additional quick question: does anyone have any advice to offer about working with a puppy when there's another dog in the house?

They're both incredibly food driven and both very jealous of one another, so trying to work with both of them around has only worked for very basic commands such as sit and lay down, and a little bit with stay.

A couple times I've put Reggie outside while I work with Dakota, or I've worked outside with him and left Reggie inside. Is that the best option, or are there any better ideas?

I have the same issues. I either put Luna in a separate room or behind the baby gate, and I crate Comet.

i seperate. usually one goes on teh stairs (i have a baby gate there). especially with fosters. if the crate is nearby i use that. It's otherwise impossible to train things.

Having said that, one thing i'd like to work on is training a solid "sit stay" or "down stay" on say a mat or pedestal. It is probably more work at first as you keep having to put the dog back but I know the trainer Kira Sundance uses them for her dogs. mostly i don't have the patience for that.

Once the dogs know their commands you can have some of the training time for the two together.

When they are first learning something (I have 3), I separate them - either putting the two that aren’t working outside or in crates or taking the “chosen one” outside and leaving the others in. Once they know things, I have them practice with the other dogs out - they each need to wait until they are asked to perform the exercise.

Even with the seniors, I do training separately. Mardi sometimes needs brush up training on her table manners (not begging at the table) and I'll gate Archie out of the kitchen. I always work Archie by himself.

I work with mine separately. I'll take just one for a walk and work then. Sometimes I'll recruit my daughter to work one while I work the other.

How do you know if it is begging? Piper is with us all the time, whether we are eating or not. So, do you consider Marnie to be begging just because she is with you or only if she is looking at you?

    Thanks,
    Tina
