    Shorebirds On The Strand

    Aye Mate's,

Just thought I might share a glimpse of a piece o' me artwork currently in progress. T'is a trio of yellowlegs gunning decoys inspired by the historically significant wooden sculptures of Elisha Burr of Hingham, Massachusetts. In me composition o' this piece, I decided to include examples of yellowlegs in varying but typical positional attitudes assumed by the birds as they lived on the beach and as Burr so eloquently represented in wood and paint. This grouping includes a "runner", an "upright", and a "feeder". The work is currently done in colored pencil on acid free, archival quality Bristol board. By use of diminishing perspective, t'is me intent to convey depth into the piece and a low angle of view as might have been seen by a gunner in the latter 19th century as he watched over part of his rig for the approach of speedy flocks tolling into his wooden birds and within range of his shotgun.

Irishwhistler drawing in progress of Elisha Burr inspired yellowlegs gunning decoys.

T'is me intent to include habitat suggestive of the intertidal zone where these birds were heavily gunned for prior to the hunting of shorebirds being made prohibited by law in protection efforts for dwindling populations. I will post the finalized piece once completed.

    Cheers,
    Irishwhistler

Thanks much Mates. The complexity of this piece has me a bit more challenged and thinking way ahead o' placement of pencil to paper, rather concentrating on the layout o' the final piece.
