    Anyone familiar with English Pointers?

Are they at all similar to GSP's? I am somewhat familiar with GSP's but no clue if english pointers are similar at all (or is that like asking if a lab is like a chessie? haha).

If you are reading this and know GSP's, once they are adult (2+) is an hour offleash, plus at home play with a buddy (dog) and some brain games at meals enough? or are we talking minimum two hours off leash? (and ditto for english pointers if you know!)

    thanks!

Different personalities. English not as high octane, in my experience. If you want references to talk with people who own/breed/show/hunt test PM me.

I have a friend with a GSP and it's at least 2 hours off leash every day, and the dog is 6.

    Tanya,
I have hunted over some amazing EP's in New Brunswick, Canada. Big ranging dogs with boundless energy. Great on birds.

Great string of EP's I hunted grouse and woodcock over in 2014 in New Brunswick.

My contact won the North American Woodcock Championship with one of his females last year. A wonderful dog both in the field and back in the camp after the hunt. A real sweet dog!

    Cheers,
    Irishwhistler

    thanks

My friend is looking for a second dog. her hubby likes GSP's. they found a dog with pointer rescue canada but it's a english pointer (which I know nothing about) so we were curious how they compare. I love GSP's but have limited experience with them (met some at the dog park, babysat a mix)

The 2-3 hours offleash running (daily!) is sorta intimidating haha.

Your friends might look at Braque Français de Petite Taille (Pyrenees type; not Gascony type). In the looks department they have similarities to GSP, but are supposed to be a little bit less dog from an energy standpoint, while still retaining natural hunting ability. You are in Canada, so they are recognized by CKC (also an FCI breed, but not AKC yet). Braque Franes) | CKC

Hmm ... I know several people with GSPs that compete in Obedience and from what they say the energy levels are much like a Lab’s - so definitely need exercise, but not crazy amounts. Maybe there’s a difference between show and working lines (most are show lines though at least one I know is a rescue so don’t know the background). I suspect like Labs, having a “job” that requires mental energy helps, too.

I think there is a pretty huge difference in lines. The show ones I've been around have been very soft, to the point of timid in some cases. The field lines have a lot of go... Again, it's a matter of shopping, describing what your idea of the perfect dog is to the breeder and hoping that breeder will be honest w/ you in the end. No such thing as a one size fits all in the Sporting breeds imo.

The GSPs have more nervous, fidgety energy than I am used to even in most field bred Labs. The English Pointers I have known are more show lines than those of which IrishWhistler speaks. I like the almost porcelain look of them, but they are not for me.

There is nothing like a Lab.
