I brought my binoculars along when we took the dogs to the lake this morning...hoping that we could get a bit of a walk in despite the freezing temps and icing last night...and spotted Broken Wing and her mate apart from the bigger flock of geese. The dogs were able to get a decent enough walk, too.
We went home, got food, and I was able to call her over to the fishing pier and throw food down on to the snow/ice of the lake. I know she doesn't care for eating food in snow...guess the cold in the stomach is uncomfortable...but she seemed glad to be eating. I figure she hasn't eaten anything since over a week ago. Her mate and the aggressive goose were also there. Aflac the domestic duck didn't make it. They didn't eat as much as I would have thought...perhaps eating again after not at all for a while prompts eating less at first. (wish I was like that)
I'm planning on resuming my morning walks in the park. I should be able to walk on the snow where the pavement is icy...wearing my regular snow/trail boots that come up only to my ankles. I'll find out tomorrow morning whether or not this is a dumb plan. It might be short lived once the melt starts in earnest...then we'll drive over just to feed BW after our walks are over. I wish I could feed her closer to me so that I can shoo off the other geese. The ones that stick around the lake are always there in the morning but then fly off...the ones that were there this morning (later than my walk) are the ones migrating who don't respond to being called and don't impact on BW being able to get the food. And I do hope we get plenty of melt before the lake starts to be water again...if it's actually water all the way up to that pier...don't know...because I'd like to be able to get to the shoreline and not be thwarted by the unseen rocks.
I can't believe those geese made it...especially BW with her exposed back and seemingly lower amount of body fat. Canada Geese must be really tough birds.

YAY! You must feel so good, happy, relieved. Probably BW was in good enough condition in the first place to withstand the blizzard and that is thanks to you.

wow, that must have lifted your spirits to see her there, and coming over for chow time! sad about Aflac though, ducks are usually pretty hard birds, must not have been in great shape to begin with.
do take care walking over there though, it still sounds kind of treacherous

Have to say I teared up. BW is one tough girl. When thinking about where they live, how they live, the things they have to endure, even so, I'm surprised.
Sorry to hear about Aflac.
You be careful and don't push it too much when trying to get closer. BW needs your loving help.

Prayers answered. Her guardian angel must have stayed close to her all week and then all the help YOU have been giving her. OR maybe you are her guardian angel in disguise as all angels don't have wings.
Please be extra careful as the ice and snow melts and you try to get closer. Sorry about Aflac.

I am so happy to hear about Broken Wing, tears of joy she made it.
I am also so sorry about little Aflac. Years ago someone dumped 3 white ducks along with river easter presents discarded. My sister would go and check on them occasionally feeding them if there was bad weather.
