    How can people not know??

Yesterday on the way home from the dog park we popped into Petsmart and I saw a couple walking around with a little chocolate lab puppy on a leash. When we bumped into them I asked how old their puppy was. The woman said he was four weeks. To clarify, I asked if she meant that they have had him for four weeks, and she said no, they met him at two weeks and he was four weeks yesterday when they picked him up from the breeder.

So I give the sermon about bybs, too young, shots, diseases and they're looking at me with a blank stare. They didn't even bother to pick him up and carry him. Idiots. I felt so bad for the little guy.

As a group of knowledgeable dog owners, I dare say we have all come across others with dogs who don't have any idea. Offering advice can be difficult not knowing who (what, LOL) we are talking to. I've too have tried with varying success.

Sue-Ram, thanks for giving it a go. Hopefully the information/advice you offered will not fall on deaf ears and the puppy does not suffer from clueless owners.

Sad. In addition to the other stuff (which usually does get blank looks) it can be helpful to mention that in most places it is illegal to sell a puppy that young. That may mean more to some folks.

Fortunately it’s not something I’ve seen much of around here.

Wow, 4 weeks is REALLY young. I am finding that more breeders prefer to hold on to puppies longer than 8 weeks.... 4 weeks? They are infants at that age.... smh...

I've seen that a few times myself. People are so caught up in the excitement of having a new puppy in their possession that any advice has not been embraced with enthusiasm (I'm thinking they're saying to each other, "Can you believe that know-it-all b___?") I don't even get into anything about the breeder, just how susceptible a puppy is to picking up diseases before their shots are well underway. It's worth a try anyway, for the puppy's sake. Sigh...

I wouldn't normally say something to a stranger, but the puppy was so little that I couldn't not. I wish I had thought to mention the illegal aspect of it.

I don't think we have that law. I've googled for it and not found it.
