    Springer breeders

Friend of mine wants a springer, either English or Welsh, but I'm trying to talk him in to Welsh so he doesn't have to worry about rage syndrome.

If you know anyone in the Northeast, send me a PM

good friend of mine drove i think into PA to pick up her new Springer pup in December. He's cute! and he has his tail! She has two older Springers, with a gazillion (i'm not kidding, i can't track them all, and their registered names are sooooooo long now....) titles in Obed and Rally from Canada and the US.
She had all but given up on getting a new pup this year, a breeding that was due for the summer didn't take. I will try and remember to bbm her to see who she finally got her pup from. She was very picky - wanted great lines, and also wanted drive for competition.

Springer Rage Syndrome | ESSFTA - English Springer Spaniel Field Trial Association

The so called and unfortunately and old fashioned name rage syndrome can occur in any breed of dog. As the link points out it was more common in show bred that field bred ESS. Any reputable breeder who does al the usual health tests will have a history of dogs without rage syndrome. It's like testing for hips and elbows, there is no gene test, you just go by having good parents.

ESS have some other health concerns peculiar to the breed, like Fucosidosis, for which there is a gene test. It is also more likely to be found in show lines.

Does your friend want show or field? There is a HUGE difference in appearance and energy between field and show bred ESS, makes Labs look pretty tame. WSS do not have the huge schism between looks and show and field. WSS are not easy to find. A field bred ESS can be a very, very high energy dog.

I hope your friend does her research. OUr girl, Whisper, was field bred and Oban was nearly not a Lab at all but another ESS. The links are from research I did 8,9, 10 years ago before we got Oban. They should be checked for updates but they are still on the Field Trial Association website.

    SEnding a PM.

    Thanks! I'll delete some.

He says he wants field, but I want show for him. He wants to take the dog hunting, but he has back pain and often ends up spending the day on the couch. So gentle persuading him to show lines. Luna's brothers and sisters are all excellent hunters and she comes from show lines.

Already done research on health tests and clearances, at this point just need names.

He may also want to consider a Brittany or a field/working English cocker. In Springers, I prefer the Welsh. In all Springers, ask about epilepsy in the lines.
