Three weeks, 7,500 klicks, the trip of a lifetime.

I've mentioned once or maybe twice that Faye and I were on holiday. We drove to Texas and 7,500 klicks equals about 4,660 miles.

We visited east Texas, where my dad's side of the family came from; Galveston; Austin; Fredericksburg; and Fort Davis. Before chilling for a day or so I wanted to share a few unedited photos and comments.

The Jacksonville High School football team plays all their home games in the Tomato Bowl.

One must take a ferry to cross from the Bolivar Peninsula to Galveston Island.

Wildseed Farms is one of the largest suppliers of wildflower seed in the States. The poppies were ablaze.

The wildflowers in the Texas Hill Country (pictured here, Texas bluebonnets and an Indian blanket or firewheel) were in full bloom.

Fort Davis National Historic Site is perhaps the best preserved example of an 1800s cavalry fort.

Faye says this scenery fits her pre-conception of what Texas should look like.

We took Achilles and Stella. They were amazingly, astonishingly, yet unsurprisingly, good. So resilient and adaptable. Living embodiments of the resilience and adaptability of dogs.

Achilles at a picnic area near Sanderson TX, patient as always.

Stella at the same picnic area, watchful as always.

I will post more in a few days. While it's good to go away, it's good to be home.

Awesome looking trip! Of course, it's even better with the well behaved Achilles and Stella.

Glad you got pictures of the flowers, love seeing them. Going to have to look up Wildseed Farms about those poppies, see if they will survive here. I have a lovely double pink poppy that does extremely well so here's hoping.

Looks like a wonderful trip! I don't recall whether Achilles or Stella called Texas home before your move to Canada but how could you not take them along, especially with how relaxed and happy they seem to be with you? What a great trip.

barry581, we did. Faye and I have discussed road-tripping for years and finally decided to go ahead!

POPTOP, thank you! Texas is justly renowned for its wildflowers. We're going to try growing corn poppies.

scoutpout, the state has so much to offer. If one has time to visit only one part of the state I'd say go to the Hill Country.

You're right, smartrock, we did call Austin home. They rode so very well after the first (long!) day when we covered 540 miles, and they got along nicely with other dogs.
