    Hoku's Sister is For Sale~

I wrote a quick check in w/ our breeder (Hoku's fine, perfect, demodexis cleared up, ear infection, but all well), and she responded w/ the news that they have decided to sell Hoku's sister. Nothing at all wrong w/ the dog (another bitch), who has done well in show; it's just that they have a lot of Labs, and another of the same age who is doing very well in the show ring.

The two are very similar in appearance—even more than most typical littermates. I know it's irrational, but it feels like Hoku's for sale. All I want to do is write back I'LL BUY HER I DON'T EVEN CARE HOW MUCH. It's totally irrational. I won't do it, but dang. It's weird.

Oh, Ok. I do want her. I know she'll get a wonderful, wonderful home. I know it would be stupid to have a sibling for a lot of reasons. But I want her. I won't do it. I am pretty sure the breeder wouldn't allow such insanity. I am sure my husband would not. And I'm probably too sane for that, as well.

    But gosh. It's hard.

Awww .... I can understand how you feel. And it doesn’t stop when they get older. Mulder was 11 when I found out his littermate Jolie was in desperate need of a home as her owner had health problems. She would have been fine - her breeder was taking charge, but I still felt like she was family and we couldn’t leave her. So we ended up taking her in until she passed away at almost 15. Granted, Hoku’s sister will have much less trouble finding a good home at her age, but I get the impulse.

Yep. It's totally irrational—she's a beautiful, beautifully-bred dog from a highly sought after breeder with a long waiting list—but my only impulse is Oh my god it's Hoku's sister we have to help her!

    Hmmmm....

Hoku is just about a year old right? So is her sister (obviously lol), and I know her sister has been well socialized, and trained, as has Hoku.

I am probably a bad influence, but if you are willing... And wanted two dogs... I would seriously consider it, the timing is pretty good actually. I am sure your breeder would consider it too, they are siblings, but were not raised together, so you won't have littermate syndrome.

Just my thoughts on the matter :-)

I'm inclined to agree with Shelley. If I were in this situation, my biggest concern would be having two senior dogs at the same time. Other than that, I've generally had two Labs more often than not, and since they are out of their puppyhood, taking care of two isn't all that much harder than one.

Let us know what you decide!

I would be the worst. I would probably say something about all the great discounts you can get when you buy supplies in bulk and the fact that two of my dogs look remarkably alike. How cute Hoku is. Stuff like that.
