    Just Train the Damn Dog...

Love this! It applies to a lot more professions than just dog training. There are lots of folks out there talking big talk... but can they walk the walk?

Excellent. By the same token... you could read every book, watch every DVD, go to every seminar (I know... I coulda put my dog through 2 semesters at Princeton on what I've spent) and still not be able to read your dog.

And even being able to read your dog isn't enough if you aren't aware of what you're doing with your own body in relation to the dog. For this, you need to have someone who is very knowledgeable observe and critique you.

I despair that Rocket Dog and I will never be a good team. But I know we are both better than we were. So there is that.

Good article. I train with a fantastic trainer who does not use jargon. But I have a PhD in Psychology, so I do understand jargon, LOL.

That article should be a must read for every who train people how to train their dog. I've got a college degree, graduated with a 3.98GPA, and I consider myself fairly smart, and I possess good common sense. All that being said when I read some of the stuff on dog training I'll just start scratching my head, glaze over and move on to something else. No matter the subject, if someone starts spouting a bunch of jargon or technical words, they will lose me almost immediately. Sometimes I feel like these people just want everyone to know how smart they are.

Basically if you can't get your message through to your audience, it's a waste of time for everyone. I'd rather train with someone who produces results, regardless of what they "know".

I have a PhD in Physiology. Which doesn't really help me train my dog or understand dog-training-jargon!

BUT!!! I did learn today that my dog gets a sympathetic nervous system, epinephrine/norepinephrine/dopamine and hell... probably seratonin and adenosine while we're at it... rush that scrambles her brain when she's confronted with a walk-up flier. She's probably flooding her brain with every neurotransmitter she's got. If only I could calculate the dose-response curve, volume of distribution, bioavailability and half-life of diazepam for my dog... maybe I could get her through it.
