    What Does RROWRF! RROWRF! Mean?

For some months now Oban has been doing this distinctive RROWRF RROWRF bark after sniffing a spot. He kicks up the dirt too. Only on some sniff spots. Usually I've continued walking while he sniffs so I'm ahead of him. At first I thought it was his, "Mum, where'd you go, wait up" bark but sometimes I'm right close by and he can easily see me. It's happening more often. I don't get it. Did someone special pee in that spot? Some he's worried about? Someone he's telling off? He trots on as usual after doing this and catching up to me. I don't get it.

We use Coyote urine to repel deer from my gardens. Bacons does not like it at all. He constantly marks over the spots and will lick and get all drooly.

I asked Hemi and he said that's French Canadian, so he doesn't quite get the translation.

I asked Mocha. He said "Sorry dad. I love you but I would be breaking an inviolable Lab code if I told you the translation"

Hershey used to growl unexpectedly, hackle-up, and look around worriedly every now and then in the park. I always suspected coyotes.

Sunnie has proven to want to follow coyote trails (proof via finding the newly killed deer after following a straight-line wind scent later proven to be a total zig-zag line by her boy...and wanting to cross the street where the coyotes obviously ran, not check out the deer). (Dan proved to be too afraid of the deer and totally not interested in where the ground scent led...but he'd enjoyed our run.) Every now and then she'll hackle-up, look around excitedly, and want to pull off in a certain direction. I'm pretty sure that's coyote, too, since we've done that before. No other prey gets her that excited...nor tends to leave so much scent in the air, apparently.

She's willing to travel to that spot to let you know what she thinks...

LOL, love the funny answers. But you know, I never considered it might be coyote. Or maybe fox. I was thinking another intact male dog but I don't see any of the other signs Oban gives if there has been one ahead of us. There are three places this tends to happen, popular dog walking places but where I have also seen coyote and fox.

Sunnie and Danny and you are welcome to come give your opinion any time. Will Sunnie RROWRF?

RROWRF is probably a good approximation of her weird sounding bark (she sounds almost like a de-barking surgery gone wrong). She'll do that when she sees a dog she wants to meet or when I'm getting ready for walkies (and usually when I'm in the stairwell so the sound echoes and I get full appreciation of her excitement).

We need a translator that will break the code of silence.

I use fox urine crystals along the fence line to help keep out skunks. I'm sure Archie notices, he seems to sniff more along the fence after putting it down, but no RROWRF. Besides, he speaks German and I'd never understand even if he told her and Mardi is staying mum.
