What city would you visit if you were me?

DH and I are thinking about going on a vacation the second week in August. We'll have less than a week so we'll need to stay in the US, maybe Canada. We want to visit a city that has good food, easy public transportation, and good sights/culture. Kimber will not go, so we don't have to worry about dog-friendliness. Given the time of year, we're crossing off the deep South (although DH is encouraging me to keep Austin on the list).

    Where should we go?

I have several favorite vacation spots. Depends on what you like to do. I will give you the short list

    1. Seattle Area-Delicious food, amazing views, great shops.

    2. Yellowstone-if you love nature and wildlife its the place to be.

    3. MN North Shore-Beautiful views, good hiking, Must go is Betty's Pies!!!

    4. Oregon Coast- absolutely beautiful! Great deep sea fishing if you are in to that!

If Canada is on your list, I recently went to Banff, Alberta for a work trip and it was gorgeous. We stayed in the National Park, there are shuttles running from the different hotels/resorts throughout the town. Banff is about an hour from the Calgary airport, you can pay to take a bus from the airport to Banff. The restaurants we ate at were really good. Can't beat the view, the mountains are everywhere. I was there in May and we even got snow. It was a business trip so I didn't get to explore too much, I would definitely like to go back there for an actual vacation. And it would be a break from the heat! Temps aren't going to be super cold or anything though, even with the snow.

I just got back from San Francisco. I can vouch for the food If you've never been, you should go do all the typical tourist things- Golden Gate Bridge, Lombard Street, visit Alcatraz, eat seafood, you can visit the vineyards in Napa, get noisy on the Wine Train, lots of things to do! Easy transportation.

Here's something to tempt you to the food:

Second Yellowstone but it will be very busy this time of year. How about Mt. Rushmore? The UP of Michigan is gorgeous.

Austin could be good - I lived there for 20 years and was there twice earlier this year. An incredibly diverse food scene; good museums; the Congress Avenue Bridge bat emergence should be at its height. You might want to rent a car for a day trip through the Hill Country around Wimberley and Blanco. Two caveats: August in Austin can be miserably hot and humid, and public transit from the airport isn't the best.

Montreal and Quebec City might be good. Hundreds of years of culture; good food; fairly good walkability and transit; they are fairly safe; the dollar/loonie exchange rate means your money will go a long way.

I'd have to say NW (Seattle and such) or N. MI, upstate NY, ME etc. I'd personally stay north in August and oh yea, when I say NW, I'd not recommend C.WA etc. It can be a scorcher once over the Cascades.... just sayin...

Up North in Michigan! Sleeping Bear Dunes, Traverse City. I grew up there and this is the best time of year to visit. Crowded but beautiful! Or as doubledip says, come out to Oregon, though it wouldn't be as much fun without the pup. It's so dog friendly that you'd regret not having Kimber along for the fun!
