    It's war

Last week Crafther took Mocha out about sundown. I have never seen a raccoon out at this time of day. About 200 feet down the driveway a 1/2 grown raccoon was meandering down the road. Mocha took off in a dead run. Recall was absolutely gone here. I'd thought the raccoon would have taken off, there were trees within 50 feet but NO the varment stood its ground. There was a short fight with DW yelling and running toward the fray. The interloper finally ran up a tree and was struggling to get up the tree. Mocha might have done some damage. We got Mocha in the house and gave him a once over about 10 times and found no scrapes or scratches.
Yesterday I went to the farm store and bought a have a heart trap. Funny thing, there were 4 other guys there buying traps. 2 of them had lost several chickens and had declared war.
This morning I went out the check for raccoons and I saw one. Needless to say, I sent it to the "farm"
1 down many more to go.

I would have Mocha's rabies vaccine boostered....sounds like that raccoon may well have been sick. Standing its ground and then having trouble ascending are both big red flags.

We had a similar problem at the old house. We set up a trail cam and a live trap. There was a raccoon party there nearly every night, but slowly but surely, Jake caught them all and "released them" away from our yard. Gotta keep those pups safe!

Agree regarding the rabies issue if they're out at the 'wrong' time of day, there is usually illness involved

I have a standard policy here; you mess with my dog, I'll shoot you!
never felt there's any shortage of varmints, we won't run out.

correction: I should have said I have a standard policy with wildlife,
didn't mean other dogs and cats.

Distemper in raccoons is also on the rise.

    Definitely talk to your vet.

Don't freak out too much though. If the raccoon was out, it wasn't necessarily sick. If it had babies to feed or has become too used to humans, it may be out and about looking for food during the day. I don't know if raccoons are like rats but it turns out that some rats are out during the day because they are low man on the totem pole and it's easier to forage when the boss rats are sleeping.

I feel the same way. Mess with my house or my animals and you're sadly in trouble. Keep to yourself and I'll let you be.

Talk to your vet if you are concerned, but as long as Mocha is up to date on rabies, I personally would not feel the need or want to go in for a booster.

First thing that crossed my mind - have a chat with your vet. While skin may not have been broken, if raccoon saliva got into Mocha's mouth, that is a transmission spot.

Same here, mess with my dogs you will not believe how nasty this old lady can be. Ah, except for the skunks. I keep clear of those even is Archie doesn't.

There is a problem in my village too. Cats are disappearing but people don't know the cause, not for sure. Fishers have been seen so someone has a live trap out for fisher. She says. I doubt she'll catch anything except a cat. We are more than a bit concerned and trying to find out if they need a license for live trapping a fur bearing animal. If they don't then we wonder if they need a release permit as the stated intent is to relocate a fisher, if caught. OR a coyote, they have some wild ideas. Meanwhile they let their declawed cats out at night.
