This weekend was my local Lab club's hunt test. This year I was on the committee, we had a new chair after many years of having the same person and we had wonderful weather (not too hot, unlike last year). The event went off without too many bumps, which was really great for a new team. We had a large attendance, selling out of Masters within minutes and adding a Masters B. Great year for the club!
On Saturday, I volunteered for Masters and spent half the day planting blinds and half the day at the line with the judges. I walked over eight miles that day just during this time (consequently, this put me over the edge and I finally won a Fit Bit Weekend Warrior Challenge!). Long 15 hour day for me! If you're interested in hunt tests and want to learn more, being at the line with the judges was like a free private lesson. You can't ask a million questions, of course, but they don't mind a few here and there. You have to handle really gross, really dead, really wet ducks, but it was worth it for the education.
Sunday was our day to run the Juniors. My little nugget passed for his second leg. It wasn't an easy test and as a group we didn't have a spectacular success rate, but he marked really well with barely a hunt. He also thought he would provide some entertainment by showing his bird to the guys behind the line after each pick-up. While cute and kinda funny, it's something we should work on before it becomes a problem. Mr. Careful was slightly bolder in his water entries (same site as the last test with, in his opinion, steep banks). We also met TuMicks who was there running her girl in the Juniors all the way from Nevada. Small world!
Today is Linus' third birthday and he has dog-school, so I made some fresh duck egg "pupcakes" with roasted chicken, cheddar and hand-carved heart-shaped toppers made of sliced beef heart to share with his dog friends. As I was dong this, I realized that the last thing a dog wants to do on his birthday is share his food, so I made another dozen with chicken and blueberries for him to keep at home.

Yes, indeed. Rose City Retriever Club put on a swell event. Only complaint was the rain. I was also told that the rain and wind was not cold and I presume I was putting on layers of fleece under my slicker because I'm from a more... er... arid part of the country. (I couldn't figure out why my face felt "sticky" after I washed it that night. Then I figured out that's what humidity does to human epidermis.) I want Labradorks to title her dog in Northern CA at the Hills Ferry event in August... but alas, she probably has other plans that don't involve as much mileage.
