Fun weekend/ Open Obed at the Lab Specialty

On Sunday, Miss Kanzi and I hit the road at 6am w/ another friend for the PSLRA Lab specialty in W. WA. We were one of 4 teams entered in Open A and the weather was PERFECT for obedience. It was actually chilly with a light misting rain that started just as we entered the ring. Kanzi had very nice heeling, and I don't know why, but I found myself almost not able to breathe thru the heeling and Fig 8-- I was so nervous suddenly! I thought I got over that years ago, but something about being in a small group of mostly friends tends to be harder for me. Anyhow, I convinced myself to breath a couple times so I didn't fall over at least though I bumbled on the initial Sit in the heeling pattern and that did cost us probably a point for a crooked sit.

Kanzi was such a happy little (she is pint sized!) worker though--- okay, a bit too happy at times so it cost her some naughty points!!! Her main points came from the Drop on recall which was after heeling. It's not typical of her to have a slow drop but she was racing so fast toward me that I think she was considering not Downing at first, then made the correct decision. Huge sigh of relief. Upon fronting, she then jumped up to "hug" me as if to apologize, so of course that cost us a couple points too! LOL. No biggie in my book. Her naughtiest moment though was after the retrieving exercises when the judge went to take the dumbbell from me and Kanzi's mother and grandfather came out to visit in spirit. She leaped up and tried to take it from the judge who kind of had it dangling out there (ughh!!!) while taking it from me!!!! Ooops. Bad Kanzi... I don't even want to know what the judge marked off for THAT! The judge had decided to combine group Stays w/ the B class, and there was just 1 yellow girl qualified (actually I'm not sure if she had Qd as her heeling was quite sluggish but regardless, they opted to do Groups). So it was that girl first, then Kanzi, followed by a Black dog, then another friend w/ her yellow boy. We were only about half way across the ring leaving our dogs for the Sit when the B class girl laid down. Ackk... How I wanted to say "Don't LOOK AT HER, Kanzi!!!". Kanzi did look a bit mortified since we'd been proofing Sits after the last 2 trials when Kanzi decided the cool grass on a 90+ F degree day at our home trials proved to be too inviting.

Anyhow, in the end, she stuck her Stays just fine and guess who won 1st???? Yippeee!!!! And, we still managed a 184.5 which was good for the Blue (her and the silly black boy next to her were the only Q'ers), her 2nd open Q, a new stuffed pheasant toy... AND $25 cash prize!

My luck continued at the club/ rescue raffle as I won a very nice Midwest wire crate and a goody bag too! And when I got home I opened up FB to find out that her 1/2 sister Tater in NC finished her CDX w/ a 196!!!! And yesterday they got their confirmation back for the Orlando Obedience Classic to be held in December. Kanzi also qualified to go (I believe for several classes that she titled in last fall at 18 mos-- Nov B, Rally Exc and Beg Nov) but I have ZERO desire to try to fly from WA to FL in mid December. We'll just stay home and root for "Team Tater" instead!

Kanzi w/ her favorite prize of the day!

3 generations: Grandma Mata (11.5 yrs), Kanzi (2yrs), and mama Envy (7.5 yrs) w/ the pretty ribbons and winnings.

Congratulations! She (and her momma and grandma) sounds like a fun girl to watch! it costs points, but its so refreshing to see a dog showing their personality in the ring, rather than some of the "automons" you see.

I agree--- I'd MUCH rather see them be a bit on the obnoxious side than the slug or wilting violet (or worse, dog that runs from the ring in avoidance) that is all too often seen. My friend who rode with me (also does some obed w/ her girl) said Kanzi looked SO HAPPY and was a lot of fun to watch. I really think the weather just jazzed her up all that much more because I've never seen her act like *that* even in training!

I wish now someone had video'd that so I could send it to my mom (who thinks Kanzi can do no wrong)...

What is really great is that Kanzi is *6th* generation (all mine) in progress on that line for CDX. And next spring, I hope to add JH to that 6th gen pedigree too but this year was a bit crazy personally so I'll wait til Miss Ruby is ready to go too.

PS, did decide to take mama Envy and maybe even Grandma back to do RE as well for fun. Ruby came into season recently so I subbed in Envy and Kiku and shoot!, they could do it right now... So could Mata as long as the weather is cool (she had heat stroke several yrs ago, so I don't push the weather w/ her -- plus she's 11.5).
