Cow crap

So we were training at a gorgeous ranch today. We had to shoo a bunch of cattle off the area we wanted to use. Naturally a herd of cows leave their calling-cards behind and all of them were (shall we say) fresh. Ram Jet Rocket Dog ran a double-double... doing a very credible job, I might add... and we were heading back to the truck when she happily stuck her snout into a fresh cow-pie and started chowing down. I yelled at her and she came up with green sh1t dripping from her jowls and looked at me like ... "what? Did you want some? What's your problem?" Yecht! And she wasn't the only one of the 20 or so dogs that were with us that did the same thing. (I mean, the grounds were loaded with land mines, so it wasn't that easy to prevent the unauthorized snacking.)

Do your dogs do this?

I was literally laughing out loud as I read that story. Leo hasn't had the opportunity, but I'm sure he would. I once witnessed him eat an entire dead baby rabbit as I tried to get it from him. The more I tried to get it, the faster he chewed and swallowed. Like the say, cast iron stomachs.

Had to quit taking Melody to any dog park. All she did was walk around head down searching for "prizes".

Teddy didn't eat them but he rolled in them. Usually the day before or morning we were heading out on the five hour drive home after vacation on the farm with my grandparents. Mum used to sic him on the barn swallows who would lead him through the tall weeds covered with early morning dew to clean him off. Worked pretty well. Eating might actually have been a bit easier to deal with.

That's so funny! I can totally picture it.

Boomer hasn't had the chance to dine on cow poop but he's grazed on his own if left alone outside to do his business. My first dog, a beagle, was notorious for doing the same (he made a game of it if you tried to beat him to his poop). We had agility classes in a raked horse arena. He was fearless about the equipment but he loved agility mostly for the surprise snacks he found everywhere in the sand.

I'm working on Boomer to be off-leash but I know stuff like this will happen. Ugh.

My husband has been fencing and wiring up the pasture in preparation for animals. He's leaning toward cattle. I told him he better focus on keeping Thor *out* of it as much as he's focusing on keeping the cattle *in*. Because I'm not giving Thor a bath every day.

It's like candy. Then they roll around in it and they're sooo happy afterward and just do not get why you don't want to touch them. This happened to us shortly after we bought our truck and did not have access to running water. We had to drive home for over an hour with Argos and Nikki sporting manure suits in the back seat.
