It does help. Sometimes when it gets real bad, though, nothing seems to help completely
![]() Hey, would any of the rest of you consider yourselves "worriers"? I am. And I think it plays a part in my stomach pain. |

Sheesh...what don't I have? Yes, I have GERD and IBS. I also suspect food allergies. My mom has colitis and my dad has diverticulosis. I have tummy troubles from the top to the bottom of my digestive tract, but the doctors aren't concerned. One of these days I will force the issue, but I've kind of gotten used to it.
And yes, Lisa, I am a big-time worrier. I hold all of my tension in my gut, so I know it is a big contributing factor. I think of myself as one of those hamsters in their wheel...running, running, running and never getting anywhere.

Zen I think you are correct about the worries. I once had an allergy and asthma doc. tell me if he could contol the nerves, my asthma, and stomach issues would prob. be cut in half. Well the diet and the surgery help. As for the nerves, I guess that is the way I am. My daughters too. I guess that is genetics for you.

Wow...is this interesting. Nerves and stomach issues run rampant in my family....oh yeah, cancer too. Fun stuff.
It could have been limes at the restaurant, but I didnt' have anything to drink. But, maybe the salsa. The specialist I went to see thinks that it was a foreign chemical on one of the peppers, and that I probably would never have that happen to me again. I was at this specialist place for 4 hours as they poked and prodded to test for allergies, of all sorts. Who knows. This heartburn thing started around 2-3 years ago, and absolutely stress related. The other stomach issues, some stress, but I know many foods set it off. I.E. peanuts. Yikes with that one......I can just have a few and I'll be paying bent over stomach pains. Yet - I'm not allergic. What I've been told, is that my whole digestive system is just not right, and never will be. That I have to really watch what I eat, and help my intestines along with lots of fiber and liquid. And, obviously, stay away from things that bother me. I've completely cut caffeine out of my diet - for two reasons now...cycst and my stomach issues. It is really amazing the difference, not that I ever had that much caffeine. And no carbonated beverages...which really stinks. I hate soda, but a beer once in awhile would be nice. (I do cheat with this one, but literally one beer, maybe once every few months.) Again, this is a very interesting conversation. Oh yeah, the other thing that the doctor said that was contributing to my increase in stomach issues: Age. Great, huh? Apparently, like everything else, your gut just gets tired of working over-time as you get older. Which is why he really wants me to help it along. Lisa: I'm going to try that licorice stuff...Ginger tea helps me a lot...just ginger, though, stay away from the mint, folks. At least for me.

Lisa - do you use licorice tea? Or do you buy the licorice root and then do something to it?
Deb - you're about my age, so now I'm really scared about what I have to look forward to. LOL ![]() Thanks, Trina |

Oh dear girls, all this crap we have is not only stress related but also us getting a wee bit older (and our girlie hormones)
. I remember just 10 years ago when I didn't have GERD, but as we age the lining of our stomachs depleats and our stomach acid gets stronger, hence the heartburn, etc. YUCK I hate getting older! I've tried many many things both natural and not, and the only thing that CURED my GERD and heartburn is NEXIUM (I know, not natural, but it's better than bleeding ulcers - H-pylori ones): http://www.purplepill.com/ Oh ya, it also helped my IBS. |

The reflux surgery helps too. Prevacid is also my friend.

Sadly, Nexium didn't work for me
![]() This is the DGL licorice I use. There are other brands as well. You can ask for it at a health food store.

Dang, Lisa, I saw those at the store yesterday but didn't buy them. I was looking for tea.
lovefor4labs - what is the surgery for reflux? I was on Prevacid for years, but I have found that Prilosec-OTC works just aw well for my heartburn. I haven't found anything to help the IBS. Someone mentioned digestive enzymes on another thread. Does anyone here take those? Do they work? Brand name suggestions? Thanks, Trina |

My husband had the acid reflux surgery when he was younger and it fixed him right up, but when they did my endoscopy last year they said there was no evidence that I needed surgery. In fact they said there was no evidence that anything was wrong in my stomach (yeah, right. my pain says there IS!). My daily reflux and sharp stomach cramps (most of those cramps were fairly high up in my stomach) disappeared once I went gluten free, though I still have occasional flareups.

They use the upper part of the stomach, and tie it around the esophagus. It is called a Nissen Fundiplication if you want to look it up. It is not to be done lightly, and please find a qualified surgeon. Mine was awesome, but the surgery is not without risks, and the recovery time is about 6 weeks. To me, it was TOTALLY worth it. That , along with the gluten free diet, has worked wonders. Zen, I bet you really have trouble when you cheat.

Funny how we're all different, Prevacid didn't work for me, not even 4 Losec daily. A personal question (don't answer if you don't want to, PM me if you'd rather) anyone have troubles with their "monthly" as well? Last edited by Black as night; 04-14-2005 at 04:34 PM. |

You know my answer... YES. However after a big endometriosis scare, the (very good new) GYN believes I have a calcium deficiency (which goes hand in hand with my gluten free/reduced dairy diet!). I now take a calcium/magnesium supplement every day, and she's even got me eating goat cheese (ugh!), and a yogurt smoothie every day (Stonyfield Farms organic!) and my cramps have gone away completely, and I had been getting them throughout the month for ages!!

I've got to admit, there are times I wish social conventions didn't prevent us from asking certain questions about ourselves with the freedom we ask them about our dogs! We don't hesitate to describe and analyse our dog's poo!
"Grip had (blah blah blah) poop today!" "Oh, that's (blah blah blah), try some pumpkin or slippery elm, or cut out the carrots". Meanwhile I sit crouched over the computer weeding through all the weird things that come up when I try to search out answers for myself! :
