Surprise retrieve

Well, took Emmit and my son out on opening day to a lake. Emmit did great. His first duck, he fell off the stand into the water - just couldn't help himself he was so pumped. I got him back and made him sit a few seconds before I let him go. The rest of the morning he just worked beautifully. Only got three, but what a joy. Yeh, he and I have some things to work on - He looks at me and says, "You need to call and shoot better" and I look at him and say, "You need to shut up when we're hunting"! LOL

After the hunt, we picked up the decoys (and he just had to swim at heal beside me as I waded and picked them up) and then headed back to the truck. The hike was about 1/2 mile through the woods, so I put on his orange vest and mine. We were about 200 yards from the water when Emmit took off to my right with his nose in the air. I whistled "here" and he came back but was whining and cutting up. I could see pretty good through the woods, so I decided to let him go. I told him, "hunt 'em up" and he took off like a bullet through the woods. About 75 yards to my side, he started circling and throwing his head in the air. My son and I thought he was probably chasing a squirrel. We starting looking up in the trees to see if a squirrel could be seen. All of a sudden, my son said, "Dad, he's got something in his mouth!" I looked and he was coming to me full speed. He circled around and healed and he had a half grown green wing teal in his mouth - fully alive. He delivered to hand - and now I had a fully alive teal in my hand.

I made him sit while I went back the direction that he came from and noticed a small water hole not more than 4' by 10' in a semi-dry creek bed that fed into the lake. There were 3 small teal swimming around. I let the one I had in my hand go back into the water hole with it's mates. It flew about a foot off of the ground and eagerly joined the group. Lots of light quacking going on.

We came on out and laughed about the whole ordeal. Guess I better be more careful about telling him to hunt 'em up - especially if I already have my limit!

Cool

What a great story. Great job Emmit! Tell dad you need a few extra treats and hugs tonight. Chances are you'll get them.

Great story! Our golden used to be able to catch hens out pheasant hunting when they would be stubbornly holding too tight. Couldn't keep hens though so we'd always let them go.

Great story, I loved it. It was almost like I was there with you. There is nothing like a day in the woods with a good dog.
