A think a small hostess gift and a thank you note would be appropriate.
so my dd is about to have her recital. Her 2 close friends are in it as well. The mother of one, a friend of mine as well has offered to host a reception at her home afterwards inviting us as well as my in laws who are coming to the recital. She's invited her family as well and also the girls other good friend & mother. She's just doing pizza & cake, and that's great. What's proper etiquette here -how do I thank her? I've offered to pitch in but she said no she covered the cost as well as already has what she needs. Do I bring her something? Do I try to give her an envelope to help cover the cost? really...what to do?

^2.
You could also bring flowers if she is a flower lover.

perfect-I will bring her a small bouquet with a thank you card attached! hows that?
Perfect!
I'd bring some cookies/mini cupcakes/dessert and a bottle of wine if they drink.
If you weren't asked to bring food, don't bring food. Some people get annoyed by that after they prepared, organized, and/or purchased food already. Flowers are great!

Since she is a friend and you know her, does she grow flowers in her garden? If yes, then I would bring her flowers she could add to her garden. I would much rather receive live flowers to plant than a bouquet, but that is me.
Have fun at the recital and party!
no..she lives in a condo so no garden..
People don't like food? Weird. I never go empty-handed to any party, personally. I do try to coordinate what I bring if it's something other than a basic barbeque.
