    Lost Birdie

A neighbor on Nextdoor.com found a poor shivering birdie under a tree while taking her dog for a walk. Actually, it was her doberman that found him and they took him in. When I saw the picture of the bird, I realized it was the same species as my bird, but I knew it wasn't mine since mine is with my parents this week. I offered to help out since I had an extra cage I never got rid of and I have the food and toys. Since they didn't know anything about birds, they gave him to me. I examined him as much as I could, but he is fearful. Unsure if that is because he's been out in the cold for awhile or if he doesn't like strangers or human hands in general. Time will tell. I am letting him settle in a bit before I try to touch him again. I can tell he was definitely handfed before he was weaned. He is not banded, so no way to trace him back to the breeder.

He also didn't care when Sierra walked past the cage (She left him alone since she knows to leave my own Meyer's parrot alone), but he could have been too weak to protest. That could change once he gets his strength back.

He looked better this morning with brighter eyes and he is eating a lot as well. I hope I can find his owner, but no one in my area is looking for a lost Meyer's parrot. I posted and searched FB, Craigslist, and the local bird store.

aww poor little guy. Thank you for taking him in and keeping him safe. Glad to hear that he is better today and eating, hopefully he will continue to eat and get stronger. He is a lucky little guy that your friend found him and got him to someone that knows about birds fate I think has tipped her hat and you now have a little addition to your family.

I have always loved birds they are beautiful and loving keep us posted on the little guy, if you find his owner or if he is already found his home with you. Plus a name that would be good too

I know nothing about birds, so I'm going to sound stupid. Can he fly? Maybe he flew away from home? Or sadly, maybe someone just dumped him.

I'm glad to see you live in CA--if he spent any time outside in a colder climate he probably wouldn't be faring as well as he is......thank you so much for taking him in! I hope he will recover & be fine!

What a lucky birdie to find you! You knew just how to take care of him, any chance you can keep him? Do Meyer's Parrots get along in pairs?

That's not a stupid question at all! It all depends if the bird has it's wings clipped if he can fly or not. I'm guessing he probably flew out an open door, happens more than I care to think about.

kaialeena I'm so glad he found a home with you! Hope he gets well for you. Do you have any avian vets close by? Good luck with birdie!!!

I too have birds and I would die if one of mine got loose. But then again I am the always overly protective pet person so that's not going to happen to my birdies lolol.

Thanks everyone. He is looking even better when I came home from work today. He still does not want me to touch him, but he tolerates me being close to the cage or placing my hand in the cage. He just doesn't want me too close to him. So he was definitely used to human hands and was handfed as a baby.

Unsure what I will do if I cannot find the owner. I originally joined this board at the end of last year as I wanted to do research on finding a new lab. By the beginning of this year, I realized that I need to put that on hold for now as my elderly parents are going through some health issues and I need to help them out (long story, but dad just got out of the hospital for the 2nd time in 4 months and mom needs to have hip replacement surgery in the spring) and my work wants to send me to the office in China for 3-4 weeks either in the spring or summer. As I live alone and with everything going on, making arrangements for 2 pets is plenty at the moment. I could possibly find ways of keeping the new bird, but I will have to wait and see. When I did have 2 birds in the house, Sierra wasn't living with me at the time.

labsnewfy: I will definitely keep this board updated on my search for the owner.

Meeps: That isn't a stupid question at all. Yes, his flight feathers are fully grown in, so he flew away from somewhere. But unsure if he escaped or if someone let him fly off. Sad thing is that everywhere I've posted in the area, I can't find anyone looking for him in the lost sections. I am partly thinking of getting his wings clipped as it can help when I try to work with him. Don't worry, getting their wings clipped is not a permanent thing. The flight feathers are cut, but it is not painful to them and when they molt, they will grow in new flight feathers again. I have to get my bird's wings clipped about 2-3 times a year whenever they grow in. it also gives them a quick attitude adjustment since they are more bold when they are not clipped.

mollysmama: I think it got down to the mid 30s here at night and the poor thing was freezing and stressed out when the neighbor found him. Birds definitely need warmer temperatures. He is definitely recovering well and I hope I find his family.

Shelley: There is a small chance as I mentioned above. I'll have to see how things work out. The risk I would take in placing both of the meyer's parrots in the same cage (my bird's cage is quite big so there is plenty of room), is that if they do end up getting along, they will bond to each other and not to me. My bird will climb on my finger, sit on my shoulder, and let me scratch his head and under his wing, etc. But if he bonds with the new bird after the quarantine period, he will not allow me to touch him unless the other bird is not in view (possibly).

Pogie, it is great to see another bird owner on here! I am concerned that when I looked through all of the lost pets posts, I didn't come across any for a meyer's parrot. I am still looking and posting found notices though.

I don't live too far from UC Davis so I wanted to see how he did for a couple days before taking him over since I find that bird vet bills tend to be higher than dogs. Also, I have very little free time these days since I have been taking care of my parents for the past month. But I might try to get out there soon.

I figured as much, as sweet as your bird is, it would be a bummer if he changed. Darn.

Have you considered me may have a microchip? I have friends with birds that are chipped, hopefully he is, or you find his owners another way.
