    Are you having winter?

My friends in the Pacific NW and New England are posting snow photos, but meanwhile, here in southwestern VA, it feels like late spring. We've had 2 snowfalls and every now and then a day gets really cold, but yesterday was in the 60s, today might meet 70, and except for a few days of cold scattered here and there, the long-range forecast is for the 60s. (Our normal is 30s-40s, with jumps into the 50s and dives into the 20s and lower.)

I hate winter so I'm not exactly complaining, but it is super-weird, and I dread the explosion in the bug/tick population this summer.

I wish I could say we didn't have winter this year. We didn't have much snow, however almost all January we had temperatures below freezing and February hasn't been kind either. I can't wait for spring, I'm sick of the cold and the wind.

Twice we've needed to shovel and I think we only had a few inches at most. We've had a little bit of extreme cold and a day of ice. That's it. We really need the moisture.

On Friday I sat outside drinking a beer. In February in Nebraska. My spring bulbs are poking up in the backyard and I have buds on my flowering trees- not good.

Here in northern Ohio, it's been a real roller coaster. Mostly above average temps, but have had a few days of some bitter cold. Below average snow fall, but have had plenty of rain. The ground is so saturated that any more rain/snow melt off just has nowhere to go anymore. While we have been lucky enough not to have any severe weather, I am just afraid the other shoe has to drop some time.

Here across Lake Erie from coppercleaner, the answer is largely 'no'. Few dips below normal temperature, many rises abouve normal. January 21st high was 15C (59F) while our 1971-2000 average January high is about -2.2C (28F). More alarmingly, the January nighttime average low was -3.3C (26F) while the climatic average is -9 (15F). We had a big dump of snow in mid-December, dribs and drabs since. A little more than half the normal January snow, normal rainfall. Mud season is about six weeks early.

Looking mid-term, no cold outbreaks because there's no cold air in the Canadian Arctic or over the Arctic Ocean. Image courtesy of ClimateReanalyzer.org. (Apologies for the huge image size; can't figure out how to resize it.)

Despite alternate weeks of above freezing temperatures, rain and freezing rain the 30" high split rail fence in our backyard cannot be seen. Only a bit of that is from snowblowing. This weekend we have easily a foot of new snow. My sister and BIL were to come this afternoon to snowshoe and have supper but are not coming because the driving, especially back home, looks like it will be bad. Our mailboxes aren't covered and we have certainly had winters when they were. Might have had this year if not for the horrible warm weather in between each lovely snow. So it's better than last year but not as good as some.

Not really. It’s mostly been in the 40’s-50’s the whole time (20’s-30’s are more typical). We’ve had 2 snowfalls, each of no more than 5 inches, which is a lot less than normal. Today was pretty typical - 35 and rainy. If it’s going to be cold and wet, I’d rather it was snowing!

Here in NE IL there's been less than normal snow. Only used the snow blower once. But, we have had some very cold days and high winds. Temps seem to be up and down. Later in the week we're supposed to be in 40-50s. By the lake we stay a little colder than inland. Not complaining about the lack of snow, hate driving in it.
