    We're getting winter...at last

That previous thread about getting winter? I think I said something about higher temps and hearing spring peeps. Hah.

It's sleeting right now. I just woke Bob up to go haul gallon jugs of water out to the heat pump because it's encased in ice. The heat has been on but I couldn't tell if the muffled noise from it was because of the ice coating or because the fan had frozen up (I flashlighted it over the fence when I took Dan out but didn't actually walk out to it...good thing I get up early). Bob is a better water hauler than I am and much more agreeable about being out in nasty weather to begin with. It's gonna be fun getting this stuff off the driveway later...I hope the thin layer of snow underneath will do something good for our efforts.

    So...yeah...we're having winter.

And Bob just came back in....fan was OK but solid ice around the unit. That's going to be an on and off thing for him all day. For some reason, our heat pump is always in just the right spot (N/NW side of house) for getting hit with anything blowing in. We do this a couple of times every normal winter and have actually had the fan freeze up before.

So far the snow under the ice did make shoveling easier. I let the pups out through the front door because we've got a covered porch with only one shallow step so it was easier for them to go right into the yard. Our usual door to get in and out of has to be shoved open enough for me to squeeze out and shovel the few steps to get off the deck to the patio and off the patio to the yard. I've put some ice melt stuff down on that little path to try to keep it from becoming an ice skating rink but already the top ice layer seemed like it was getting thicker. My husband parked at the end of the driveway nearest the street last night. If he decides to go to work, we would only need to shovel a path to his car, and it's not so deep that we'd even have to do that.

Yeah, we are finally getting winter hear too. Suppose to be 19 degrees plus wind chill tonight and yesterday we had 3 " of snow and it is snowing right now. And of course all of the flowers and fruit trees are in full bloom, so tonight they will be lost. I feel sorry for the farmers and fruit growers. I guess as always us consumers will pay for it in the end.

I went out and shoveled the already-melting stuff at the curb at the top of our driveway down to the storm drain. If that doesn't stay clear, we'll end up with water on our (downhill) driveway. They salted down the middle of our street yesterday and I'm sure that's where the melt is coming from. The accumulation on our bottom-of-driveway drain area (runs between two raised beds) wasn't melting and was harder to shovel...ditto our short sidewalk from the driveway to the front door (not expecting any deliveries today but figured someone might appreciate my effort...we don't use the front door/sidewalk ourselves). It's already really heavy.

I hope Bob's snow blower will agree to be an ice blower once he reemerges from his den.

So far, I'm thinking we got lucky. Didn't get the promised foot of snow and (crossing fingers here) the ice hasn't interfered with the electricity. (winds yet to come...that may change)

I think this is a bit less annoying to me because we haven't already had a whole winter of bitter wet weather. I feel for the folks who've been battling storms all season. That really gets to me when we have that.

Here in this eastern part of Kansas it's been a strange winter season but fairly mild overall.

While often we get much variation between southern Gulf breezes and Arctic winds, overall this winter has been relatively mild -- some January & February days with temps in or near 70s (F) and then with a few days as cold as the teens (F). Early this week we had temps as low as the teens or maybe single digits (F); the forecast for later this week is to get some days back to the 70s (F) or very near it.

Daffodils, hyacinths, forsythias and pear trees have all been blooming, new green leaves are beginning to show on trees and lawns, and many KU college girls on campus were wearing shorts & short sleeve (or sleeveless) tops -- and then came the cold with a couple inches of snow this week and so back came coverings for bare skins. "If you don't like the weather, wait a day or two."

In Maryland, it's "If you don't like the weather, just blink."

Ours has been the same roller-coaster...and the plants now are paying the price. Our forsythia are still pretty much OK, but only from a distance. The daffys are under snow. My flowering quince flowers are all brown and they're pretty hardy. And the cherry trees in the park? Pffffttttt.....

Been an odd winter here too with no snow and warm weather. Daffodils are tulips are peaking up but bud shoots still underground. Record low snow fall for January and February. Made up to that today. Over 14 inches yesterday and today, a record for March for our area. Tomorrow very cold. Heard the cherry trees were blooming at the basin; bet they are gone now.

We were to get 12 - 18 inches of the white stuff here in southeastern PA, but were I am was close to the snow/sleet/rain line so could get less. My father in law about 130 miles north of me got over 24 inches.

What we ended up with was a little ice under a few inches of snow topped off with a couple inches sleet/ice. An ice/snow/ice sandwich. I think the 12 inches of snow would have been better (did I really just say that?)

Clean-up yesterday after the storm was a bear, very very heavy and hard to scrape down to the concrete.

I feel bad for the folks who didn't get out and deal with the mess yesterday. It's even worse this morning, the semi-hard mess that was left yesterday by plows left a wall that a bricklayer would be proud of. Not going to go above freezing today so anywhere there was snow yesterday has a solid few inch layer of ice on top that will be here awhile.

Golf cleats are going to be the best footwear out there today.

Like poptop, we've had a very mild winter, in the past month over half a dozen days over 70 degrees, my daffodils had some flowers on them last week, now they're buried in ice.

Yesterday we went for a long walk and I had a sweatshirt and spring jacket on. It went down to -25 overnight with the windchill and it's still -10 this morning. The weather seems to be changing from one day to the next. It's been crazy.
    Thanks Everyone!!
