Saturday, Andrew and I went to College Royal, at the University of Guelph. My niece, Grace is just finishing her first year at OVC (Ontario Vet College). We were too late getting there to see her at the radiology display. She gave us a little tour of her home away from home. Told us a few things that skeeved us out. "Imagine"' she said "doing a spay on a dog, moving an intestine and it moves back." Giant kidney worm. What?? A worm that develops in the kidney and is almost a yard long and as thick as your little finger. Usually found in the left kidney and totally destroys it. I did a quick bit of research and it's extremely rare in dogs. Phew!
After the mini tour we took her and her roommate out for lunch. More interesting vet talk. I can't even grasp the amount of information she needs to know. Right now, she is leaning towards medium to large animal care, maybe specializing in goats. Interesting, she said roughly 10% of the current graduating class of 120, plans on large animal practice.
Im looking forward to going to College Royal another year. The campus has changed so much from when I graduated 25 years ago.

It's nice they are still doing College Royal. It must be so interesting to see it again with the next generation of your own family involved. Specialize in goats? Are there so many goats that would be financially a good move? I do see more around here but still, not lots. I guess there will some pictures in my next alumnus magazine. Hint.

I know she really likes goats, but maybe the reality will kick in, sometime in the future. A local vet here is an equine specialist, with a mobile clinic. Because of the down turn in horse racing she was having less clients in the area. She started branching out doing vaccines, euthanasia etc. for small animals. She also will do accupuncture by referral on small animals
Friend of my brothers is a large animal vet, he reached a certain age and decided that 3am calls to attend to a difficult birth in a cold drafty barn, wasn't something he wanted to continue to do, so he became a meat inspector.
Whether she specializes in goats, horses or small animals, she has a lot to learn. Bless her.
