Maybe this was a normal behavior when there were more whales.
Humpback whales travel either alone or in small pods and not for long. Off the coast of South Africa they have swarmed in groups of nearly 200 which has everyone baffled. It's far away from where they normally feed and the whales are younger.
Scientists are not sure why but the article states that the number of humpbacks are increasing and that's the first good news about a species I have heard in awhile.

That was mentioned in the article. That maybe it is normal behaviour but the population was so low for so long that we just didn't know it. You don't hear too many good things about animal populations in the news any more.
I love going to Maui in the winter because I get to see the humpback whales and their babies. It's my favorite thing to do.
