Warden Art For A Brother Lost

    Aye Mates,
Brought this painting to me framer today to be custom framed (double mat, conservation glass, and beautiful wood that picks up the warm tones in the painting. The work in pastels is being donated to the Conservation Officer James V. Spignesi Jr. Memorial Scholarship ( an annual $10,000 award to a student at the UCONN School of Agriculture and Natural Resources Engineering). C.O. Spignesi was a graduate of the wildlife biology program at the school. Jim and I were squad mates on 20 NOVEMBER 1998 when he was shot and killed in the line of duty while conducting a foot patrol to combat deer poaching. T'was the most sad day o' me career.

I will be donating this original painting titled "BROCKWAY BRANT" with no reproductions to be made (one of a kind), a tribute to me Fallen Brother. Done in soft pastels on archival quality pastel board, the work depicts a legendary "BROCKWAY SKIFF" as built by the late master boat wright Earl Brockway. Many o' the hardcore fowlers on Long Island Sound hunted out o' the iconic Brockway when I was a young warden, "old salts" that knew the boats to be a worthy craft on rough waters. Earl Brockway built the boats one at a time in East Haven, Connecticut.

The skiff is depicted with the vessel registration CT 6648 JS with a "98" insert sticker, that including Jim's State Police radio call number (6648), his badge number (648), his C.O. radio call number (648), his initials (JS), and (98) the year he was killed in the line of duty. Boot tracks on the beach leading from the boat toward the hunting blind fade into the sand, that representing our very sudden loss of Jim whilst he had so much promise ahead o' him. The rig o' brant decoys on turbulent waters represent the patrol duties Jim had early in his career as a Conservation Officer and that life continues about us even after such significant loss.

The painting will be offered at a banquet and auction to be held on April 22nd, 2017 to support the scholarship and a number of other outreach initiatives conducted annually in tribute to Jim's legacy of generosity and service to others and his dedication to the profession of natural resources and conservation law enforcement. Jim, you are loved by many and are NEVER FORGOTTEN.

    With Utmost Respect,
    Irishwhistler☘️

What a beautiful tribute. I love how you include all the symbolism. Do you share that information with bidders or the auction winner?

    JC001,
Thanks much for ye kind sentiment. There are written descriptions of each piece of artwork displayed and an artist bio. The auctioneer also gives a description of each item offered prior to the start of bidding.
