My New Obsession - Tie Dyed Eggs

Posting this in case any of you would like to make some in time for Easter. Great little afternoon project to do with kids or grandkids. Thinking me this has PopTop written all over it. I bought some more 100% silk ties this afternoon and my sister emailed me photos of some she found at Salvation Army. We're going to do them on the weekend. I blew out three of these eggs and hope to follow instructions to coat their insides with a mixture of modpoge to help preserve them, and on their outsides to make them shiny. ONe, unfortunately the one on the right that I like the best, is hardboiled and it won't last and you shouldn't eat it lest chemicals from the dye leached into the egg.

I've read about those but haven't made any. I guess if I went to the trouble of making them, I wouldn't want to break and eat them but I wonder if everyone who makes them knows you can't eat them. Yours look very cool!

I wanted to try this but couldn't find ties that I knew were 100% silk. Maybe I'll have another look this weekend.

So, in case anyone thought they'd like to do this and saw the fake eggs like I did at Wallmart yesterday, NO, they don't work. I poked holes in one and it collapsed. I never took Physics at school but I wondered if they needed holes to equalize pressure in boiling water for 20 minutes. The unpoked one only caved in a tiny bit but neither took the colour very well.

You're so right, it does have my name written on it. Was wondering where to find the ties but now you've put me on a good trail. I've also seen eggs died with natural colors - onion skins, red cabbage. Gotta get busy.

My sister and I made more of these eggs yesterday. Hers are the paler basket, mine are mostly darker. It was a fun way to spend some time together and the whole family gathered round for the unwrappings. Part of the fun is you are never sure quite how they'll turn out. We blew all the eggs out first, so we'll be able to keep them forever, barring breakage.

Sis is an RN and she used a succession of three gradually larger hypo needles to make the holes in her eggs and then she used the largest syringe to blow air into the egg and force the innards out the other hole. She was able to get much smaller holes than me, plus she didn't have to blow her brains out like I did. I blew mine out by mouth, I could only do about 3 before needing a rest. LOL, we both now have a lot of baking to do, to use up the egg innards.

I love those. I really, really need to find some silk ties. Maybe it's time to check Andrew's closet .
