How Many People You Know Made it to ONE HUNDRED? Or More?

My Mum's friend passed away yesterday morning in her sleep. She turned 102 in March! My sister and I know her quite well and went to her 100th birthday, where she stood up and thanked everyone personally for coming, ad libbing anecdotes about them, their relationship to her and how far they had come. She lived in assisted care for some years and then applied to a nursing home. She didn't qualify for a nursing home till after 100, she didn't need help for enough things. Remarkable, though not a life without some sorrows in it. We will miss you, Bess. God Speed.

My Aunt will be 103 this September. A friend's Mum was 101. Another friend of my Mum hit 100 but we missed her birthday. All women. There are a few others but these are the ones we knew well and socialized with. We know of a few too, who were born late 1800s and saw the year 2000 come in. Three centuries, incredible.

    What about you?

WOW, amazing. I only know of my colleague's grandad who is 104. He was fine for his age until recently, when he stopped eating.

wait, I'm mistaken. Three neighbors, two here, one from when I was growing up.

Both ladies who lived across the street from us here, not together, in separate homes, lived to 100-102. Both were cared for at home by home care aides for years. One moved to a nursing home once her health started declining following a stroke. Her husband died back in the 1940s, she had no children. She lived alone until she was about 90 with frequent visits by someone who used to live in the house I now occupy, who acted as her legal surrogate. The other stayed in her home until she died, with the care of a home health aide and her 5 or 6 children, who are all older than I am.

The other woman was our next door neighbor when I was a child. She's still alive at 104, I think, and although my mother is still living in the house I grew up in, it was necessary for this lady to move to assisted living after several falls, including one down her basement stairs. She also lived alone until she was well into her 90s following her husband's death in the 1980s.

No one I know went to 100, My Grandmother on my mom's side went to 96, and my mom until cancer was still out walking 5 miles a day. She made it to 87. Unfortunately the men side of my family very few make it to 70.

I'm in the Endacott Society, a group for retired faculty, staff & associates at the University of Kansas (the cradle of basketball) -- I joined as an associate having taught in the evening college of Washburn U over a 25 year span. Endacott has a variety of weekly and monthly activities, (so enjoyable I moved from Topeka to Lawrence about 5 years ago), and among them is a play reading group. Our leader is Arnold Weiss, a former prof. of Spanish and graduate school dean, and I'm kind of his "sherpa." Arnold turned 101 last August and has such a sharp memory and mind, I'm envious. A few years ago, I was visiting him in his apartment and I saw him flossing and brushing his teeth. Since then I've also flossed and brushed mine every evening figuring that was much easier and quicker than learning Spanish. My mother drove until she was 94-95 and died at 97.

My great Aunt was close, in her late 90s. Dad passed at 96 and Mom was 94, passed within a little over a month of each other. As I remember from Mom's family history, most lived till mid to late 90s.

Wait, wait, Dad's brother is still alive and he was older than Dad. I know when Dad passed he was over 100, I think in the 102 range. He lived by himself until about 100 and then could not keep up a house so he moved in with his son.

My great grandmother on my mom's side lived till she was 100. Her daughter, My grandma is 81, I believe. And my grandfather passed away last year at 94 (yes, big age gap between the two!). I tell my mom that she has longevity in her genes. On my dad's side, my grandfather passed away at 92. So I have long genes on both sides.

The DH's Great Aunt Bunny made it past 100 and DH's Great Grandma is 99. Great Grandma lived on a farm alone til a few years ago when she "needed to move to town" She still goes to dances a few a times a week where she dances by herself if there isn't a dancing partner. She's the first one on the dance floor and the last one off. And she wears high heels.
