Attempt At "Tie" Dyed Eggs

Not a difficult process at all, just a little time consuming in prep. Found the ties at the local community thrift store.

The egg on top was an attempt with a gold colored tie with blue patterned stripes. Didn't work.

They look GREAT. You got really good, tight coverage of the eggs with your ties. And are you really tempting fate by putting them on a pizza stone? Brave.

I found a website where the lady mixed mod podge about 50/50 with water, squirted it INside the eggs, swished around in there, drained, let dry, for a bit extra protection. When they were dry she coated the outsides with straight mod podge. I have done a few inside, need to do the rest. I saw mini "tree" type displays that I like. When I walk Oban I'm eyeballing all the fallen trees to see if one might have a suitable branch. After the recent strong winds and wet snow there should be some down that will work. I think a dead one will be too brittle.

Silly question, but when you looked for ties, did they say on the tie what the material was?

Yes, most. Most had a little black tag on the small end. A few were elsewhere on the tie. Some felt like they were silk to me but turned out to be acetate. I can hand feel wool in a sweater for a previous "obsession" but I didn't buy any ties unless they said they were silk.

What Snowshoe said. Had to hunt for the first tag but then I caught on. 100% silk. Also, it was easier to work with a thinner material than a thicker piece simply because you are trying to conform to the shape of the egg. I used twist ties to hold the fabric, left a little wiggle room and gently pulled the fabric. Then I twisted the tie a little tighter. Also, I used one of DHs T-shirts for the outer layer and found it was a little thick. Wondering if a gauze cloth would be better since it is more flexible and thinner.

Snowshoe, I did not blow out my eggs. Have tried that in the past and it was a disaster. Saw on The Chew this morning they blew out eggs, colored them, plugged the hole in the bottom with a little hot glue and used an arrangement of them with a single flower with a little bit of water. Actually displayed them in an egg carton.

Good luck on branch hunting. Oban should be able to help you with that.

My sister used those plastic ties you pull one end through a little buckle sort of thingy. She was able to get them nice and tight but it was hard to cut them off. She says she'll use twist ties next time.

Not sure I want Oban's help finding branches. He is a male dog.


ETA: I started using gauze (cheesecloth) two layers thick. I knew when I kept that stuff from an old whiplash neck collar it would come in handy some day. I think a mistake my sister made was she wrapped the silk and the gauze all at once and did not get the tie fitted to the egg very well. You have to wrap the silk, secure it, and then wrap the gauze and secure it separately.

Oh, and both silk and gauze are easier to fit tightly if you soak them wet first.
