    Oh For Heaven's Sake!

The camera on my nice little HTC Desire C cell phone malfunctioned. OH fixed it, it worked then went again; he fixed it again, it worked then went again; he fixed it again, it worked, it went bad again. Obviously the camera is not reliable so I bought a new one yesterday. The HTC Desire C is really small, but I got as close to it's size as I could.

Called Bell last night, switched the IMEI (iemi??) number and SIM number over to the new phone. Now there is NO phone service on my old phone. So what happens? Now the camera is working consistently again on my old phone. AT least for every time I've tried it this morning. Now I wonder, should I switch the IMEI and SIM numbers back to my old phone? Could phone service be what's wonking out the camera? After three years or maybe four?

Truly a first world problem. But you can't buy small cell phones these days so I'd like to keep the HTC Desire C if the camera would work.

Yeah, it's like when you misplace something. Soon as you buy a new one you find the old one. Or when you finally throw something out, two weeks later you have a use for it and wish you still had it.

I could tell the story of loosing a new cell phone, then buying an Iphone, then returning said Iphone and re-buying said Iphone by adding an extra line to our plan. Then finding the original cell phone I lost, then returning said Iphone, AGAIN. Then three days later, I looked down a see a light in Sophie's mouth. Yes, it's my cell phone that was lost, but now found. And of course, she's cracked the screen, basically destroying the phone. So back to Best Buy to get the Iphone. AGAIN! I"m not sure but I am pretty sure I'm the only person who has ever bought the exact same Iphone 3 separate times.

But I won't tell that story.

I'm super impressed with your loyalty to the HTC Desire C. I had one. Loved the size. Would get another one that size too but none to be had (it went into a creek courtesy of Boomer). Was told I was lucky to have it work so long - it's apparently known to have problems. Are you trying to decide to return the new phone? Can you try a Bell pay-as-you-go SIM to see if your HTC will fully work again? If it works, you can swap back via your cell phone company. I miss the compact size but have gotten used to the higher resolution images my new phone takes.

I didn't know there were pay as you go SIM cards. All I would have to do is call Bell though, ask to switch it back. The old SIM is a different size so it's still in the HTC. Even though the new phone, an LG F60, is wider and nearly a full inch longer I already like the higher definition stills and video. 1080 for video now, over 720. Both with 5mp cameras but crisper shots and truer colours on the LG. The LG is already three years old, it was on clearance for $70 at Staples. And Staples gave me a free SIM card.

I do LOVE the HTC Desire C. OH and I both have one, his is fine. It is smaller (the screen is only 3") than the LG (4.5" screen) and nicer to hold with it's more rounded edges. A bit harder for him, with his bigger hands and fat fingers but it fits in a shirt breast pocket. HOwever I think since it is quite old it will go again on me. I was just lucky the second salesman I spoke to at Staples volunteered that they had some clearance phones or I would have missed the LG. So I think it would be smarter to keep it.

Staples did have another small phone, a ZTE, on clearance. I think that's what it was. It was just a wee bit bigger than my HTC but it seemed cheaply made, very flimsy back when we took it off. And I could not find reviews or specs or hardly anything about it online. With a 5mp camera too but I could not find out what the video resolution was. I passed it up.

One thing to ask the carrier, because your talking about swapping sim cards. Are you physically swapping sim cards from one phone to another? If so your old sim card may not be compatible with your new phone. As technologies have changed, and very recently as well, a lot of old sim cards don't work in newer phones. So that might be the problem with the new phone, you simply need a newer sim card to go in it.

Jeff, I'm not sure what you mean. There isn't a problem with the new LG phone and it has a new SIM card, a micro SIM, in it. The old HTC worked as a phone just fine till I ...

Oh, I see where I confused you. I didn't physically switch the old SIM card from the old phone to the new one. I switched the service. I had to call Bell to do that because not only do they record the SIM number but also the IMEI number. New phone, new SIM, new IMEI.

The SIM and active phone service wouldn't affect the camera, would it? I was figuring it was just a weird conincidence that as soon as phone service to the old phone was disabled the camera started working again. Surely that's just a weird coincidence?

ONe disappointment, the new phone, the LG F60, has quite poor sound. I don't care about phone calls, it won't be used for more than the odd emergency call. But I use the phone for our skating music and it does not sound good. I was going to give the old HTC away but now I guess I'll keep it just for skating. It's smaller and I can carry it around better anyway.

Oh, apparently screens are measured like TVs are, diagonally. That makes my little HTC screen 3.5 inches.

It shouldn't affect the camera no, not normally. However, if the phone was stuck in kind of a loop trying to connect to towers, or something like that then it could have been using the processor really hard which would have affected the camera. If you get too much going on in your phone it can cause problems with other things. So being the service was shut off, then it was no longer searching for towers. This could be sign of other things that the end is near for that phone. Like it could be a malfunction with your antenna, or something on your processor, or something in memory and by cutting off the service it freed up resources to let the camera work again. It is possible it could just be a software glitch, if you could find what software is causing it remove it you could probably reactivate your old phone. But you would need to diagnose it. I pay very close attention to what software is installed on my phone and what updates get installed. Usually when something starts acting up it is due to one of those updates or apps. So I start removing them in the order they were installed when the problem started. So this could just be a app on your phone running amok. It was trying to connect to the internet and so on and causing your phone to go wonky. Once service was shut off the app quit. I have always had lots of bad luck with weather apps. I am not sure who codes them but they always get flaky.

A lot of phone will not let you use your camera when on the phone because it takes quite a bit of processor and memory for each operation. My last one I could take pictures while on the phone but not using flash, it would come up and tell me it is disabled while on the phone. It would not let me record video either. It is still a phone after all first, then camera and so on second. The newer top end ones have bigger better processors so they can handle more.
