My front loader always smells really bad on the first discharge of a new wash. Unlike internet reports I've read it does not smell itself. I do follow advice to always leave the door cracked open a bit when it's not in use. WE think some of the last drain water from the wash the week before stays trapped in the discharge lines. The washer is below grade so all that water has to be pumped up to the laundry tub and then again up from the tub to our septic. So did water from the previous top loader and it did not smell but I'm told HE soaps have something in them that leads to this smell. Still, that last discharge of water is the rinse, how much soap is there in it, anyway? You can buy special cleaning agents for front load washers. Since it's not my washer itself that smells I haven't tried them but maybe I should, maybe they would clean the leftover water.

If it's water left in the drain hoses, I wonder if running a rinse cycle with some bleach in the water and without clothes in it after all the wash has been finished for the day would leave the drain hoses with a bit of dilute bleach solution and if that would discourage the growth of mold/mildew/other nastiness. I don't know, all my washers have been top loaders.

I had an issue and cleaned behind the rubber seal with a cloth and in between the rubber. That seemed to solve my problem. There was a lot of build up of what i might say fur. I had always cleaned the center but not the outside seals. Good luck. I know I wont go with a front loader again.

Yep, wipe down the rubber seal every once in a while and don't close it right after you've used it. I always leave the door ajar after a wash and I haven't had the smell problems.

Never had a problem with my old washer but the new one (top loader) has a reminder light that tells me when I have to run a cleaning cycle. I don't think this one drains as completely as the old one.

Bleach isn't good for septic tanks, kills off the beneficial bacteria. Maybe hydrogen peroxide would help.

Faye bought a Kenmore Gallery front load about 18? years ago. Great washer. Clothes came out clean, spun out the water well. Then the clutch died two or three years ago. It made sense to buy a new washer. We thought, the previous Kenmore Gallery was a great washer, the Consumer Reports reviews for similar models to the one we're thinking of are good, let's buy another.

We are quite unhappy with our new one. There's this groove in the door gasket that collects water - and mold - if you don't leave the door wide open, wipe it out and put a washcloth in the groove to collect the moisture, then take the washcloth out. We occasionally feel compelled to do a clean cycle with like three cups of bleach, which we rarely if ever did with the old one.

I co-worker gave me his old one for a case of beer. It works quite fine. We just leave the door wide open when not in use and I use one of those packs every few months to keep it clean. I find the cleaning packs have a strong smell to them that bothers me.

We were using Gain detergent and they changed their formula (so I was told) and it made me itch all day long so no more Gain.
    Thanks Everyone!!

The method I used seems to have taken care of the issue for the moment. I don't like the thought of bleach because I'm washing pads with urine on them. I do know for a fact that water is collecting in the drain just because I accidentally set the dial below the wash mark once and it started spitting out drain water immediately. I'm pretty grossed out by that.

Does your machine have a filter on it that you can clean? My front loader has one - there's a little "trap door" on front of the machine (the bottom left side, I think). In that, there's a drain line that you have to empty into a small dish and also a filter that you pull out and rinse in the sink. I know if I go too long between cleaning that thing, I get a funky putrid smell.

I also do what others have mentioned above - wipe the gasket and leave the door open in between washes and run a "sanitize" cycle periodically.
