sorry but it could also be the main sewer line. we have some kind of insurance with he water company and usually about once a year we have "doodyman" (you cant make this up) come and he snakes the main line, which I'm told, leans toward my house, as opposed to away from the house , but this year, i all of a sudden smelled something in the laundry room, and it's a newish machine, top loader, but no slop sink anymore. of course, nick smelled nothing and it was 11 months so.....the guy came, snaked the sewer line, (all the roots that were growing into the line are now dead, since the tree died during sandy and we had it removed about 4 years ago, finally the roots died too) and then he took the hose out of the hole the washing machine drains in, and ran water thru it. and thus, the smell has gone . so whatever it was, was clogging the line for the washing machine. never had it before and never want it again.

Re: you can't make this up (nothing to do with this thread)

I called Animal Control a few years back to come get a dead deer just on the other side of our fence. The man who came out had D.P.P. on his truck. I figured, Department of....???? Nope. Dead. Pet. Pickup.

It's been fine since I cleaned it. I think it is the machine but we do have our own septic tank and it's due for cleaning so that backing up is always a threat although it is downhill.

    That's funny about doodyman.

Thanks for the reminder. I bought a new washing machine (topload) last fall and owners' manual suggests to run the "Clean" cycle after every 30 loads. You just put a cup of bleach in (or some special cleaner tablet), it fills w/ extra water, etc. so it gets rinsed out better. Did that yesterday...
