    Waiting for the rash

Yesterday morning on our dog walk, I spotted two sparrows caught in the horrible plastic netting that's part of what the county uses on top of new grass seed. Don't get me started on how dangerous this stuff is to humans and other beasts alike. So...these two little birds are frantic...the stuff is all around their little feet and around their necks.

I'm going to help them. Dogs on sit/stay...husband, too, although I hadn't issued that command.

Problem...for about a split second....they were in a very lush growth of poison ivy. Oh well....

I finally found someone living near the lake who opened her door for me (a little after 7 in the morning) and loaned me a pair of scissors. Scared little birdies....somewhat covered in their own poo...that I cradled with my hands and my t-shirt. My poo-covered t-shirt.

I got the birds free. I hope all of the netting was off them...they flew off one at a time...the first one really fast....I really didn't see if I'd gotten it all. But I consider that a success.

I was going to use some poison ivy oil stuff on my hands when I got home. I got busy with rinsing out my shirt pre-wash....

And forgot to wash my hands with that special stuff. It's too late now. (I didn't remember till this morning...how many body parts have I touched so far???)

I sure hope I've gotten less reactive to this stuff as I've aged....I was up to my elbows. Oh yeah....I forgot....I also had to use my teeth to loosen the bit of netting from what was still very securely attached to the ground. So....my face....I'm sure....

Oh no. You should get a medal for helping those wee birdies. Why in the world would someone put netting over poison ivy?

Yikes! One thing that has helped me with poison oak breakouts is purell hand sanitizer. It is most useful at the beginning 'oozy' stage (ew, I know) by drying out the rash quickly, and it helps stop the itching too.

The netting was where reseeding had taken place....in this spot, the poison ivy had grown up adjacent to the netting and also somewhat through it....it was growing over the netting where I reached in.

I can't stand seeing anything in distress...can't just walk by. I've had some (minor) adventures....

God bless you Sundance!!! Maybe you will luck out and the reactive oils in the poison ivy has not reached the leaves get.

Maybe you should carry a small pocket knife with you while you go for a walk, I ALWAYS do and have had to use it several times.

I actually ordered a pair of folding scissors when I got home. I wouldn't have been able to use a knife (my first thought) on the netting that was on the birds but it would have come in handy with another person to use to cut the birds/netting loose from the rest of the netting that I couldn't get loose from the ground. I needed both hands to hold the birds while they were still tethered to the ground....I'm surprised I was able to get my teeth on the crucial part of it...and glad it wasn't more strands than it was at that point. (Ewwww....I can't believe I used my mouth without giving it more than a second thought.)

Thank you so much for helping those poor birds. You did what needed to be done no matter what problems it might cause you.

Hopefully the action of washing your shirt got all the oil off your skin.

Nothing yet. I like Fran's idea that maybe I removed some of the oil when I fooled with the shirt. But I read where, if it's not your first exposure, it can take 2 - 3 weeks to show up. This is definitely not my first exposure...my first was 34 years ago...putting in our hedges...and is something I never want to experience again. But I've had very minor isolated rashes from the stuff since so I'm hoping my sensitivity has lessened with age.
