    Not sure what to do.

My husband has been in physical therapy. He has brittle bone disease and broke his knee cap. His surgeon said 12-18 months.

One of his PT's suddenly started telling him to "just go to a gym". My husband talked to him and said that he was uncomfortable with the way he was talking to him and reminded him that he had a condition and that they needed to work together. The PT responded by canceling the insurance referral. My husband went to his doc and got another referral. But apparently this guy holds a lot of sway and the receptionist said that she didn't know what to do with the referral because the PT had discharged my husband.

It struck me as extremely strange that a PT facility would hold a PT's opinion as superior to and MD's. So I went online.

This guy has been representing himself as a medical doctor for over ten years. He's not a DPT. He's not an MD. He's a PT. He actually lists his expired Florida PT license as his medical license and has a private practice in another town with a slightly different name. I'm not speculating here. His name is unique and he lists the same license numbers on all sites.

His PT license is coming due in July. My first inclination is just to take him down on a state level. But I realize that I'm not happy with the situation and could take out a guy with a 16 year career.

    Any thoughts?

    Oh, yikes.

I think the right thing to do is report him. Whether or not I'd do it....I share your concern.

It sounds to me like he's not operating in the best interests of patients....and that sways me over to the reporting side.

I hope your hubby's progressing nicely.

Thanks. At this point, we have to find another PT group regardless of the outcome of this just to keep my husband's therapy going. I put together a letter to the PT's employer. Maybe he can shed some light on the subject.

A fraudulent 16 year career. Representing himself as a Doctor for ten years when he is not? Who knows what harm he has done and could continue to do? He needs to be reported.

This is why we have licensing and medical/nursing/etc. boards. For this exact thing. I would tell you that you are doing the involved professions (Physicians and PT's) a great favor by helping the boards to clean this situation up. Perhaps if you could document either on letterhead or charts or even a sign on a door, or a webpage that he has affixed MD to his name. That would be helpful. But even if he was straight up legit in his PT title and practice, you are within your rights to take your concerns about the level of care to the boards.

Vis. the insurance... your (real) MD may need to make a call or write a note to the medical director for the insurance company.

Report report report. (Although I will note that PT's can get a Doctorate of Physical Therapy, so he could be called Dr. If he's saying he's an MD, that's a clear no-no.)

all the times I did PT after surgeries I learned the exercises/stretches and did them at home...but I hate hospitals/med centers in general. good luck...I have enough stress in my life w/out creating more of it.

Definitely report! BUT, before you do, document everything. Reporting to a superior probably will not work as I can't believe he/she is not aware of the situation. Is there a state organization/regulatory agency to oversee PT facilities. Be careful what you say or write when reporting, you need to be able to back up your allegations. People like him can cause more harm than good and need to be stopped.

He is a legitimate PT. However, he advertises himself as an MD and it seems that he may have attended medical school. That's not the kind of thing that can be easily verified online. He claims to have gone to medical college however but that's weird because the school has a DPT program in a completely separate department.

I think you're right, Fran. I should just file a complaint with the state. We don't want to have anything to do with these people anymore anyway.

You should be able to verify his degree with the state medical society. They could tell you fast if he is not an MD.
