    New critters

We got 6 cattle for our pasture today! 5 steers and 1 heifer. Thor just wants to play with the big dumb dogs - we're not letting him.

Here are twins that are part of the herd, so far called Wingus and Dingus. The rest have predictable names like TBone and Ribeye.

Friends got a Hereford cow but when it came time to do the deed, they couldn't. Molly produced a calf for them for several years. They were able to bring themselves to sell the calves.

They are handsome beasts. I could not name them and then send them off to become dinner. I'd have to think of them like all those dogs who "went to live on a farm".

They are fun animals to observe, but so dumb! I'll try not to get too attached because I really love a good steak! Luckily we have a fantastic local processor who will take care of the deed when necessary. We already get our beef from them so it won't look any different in our freezer.

friends had a small mixed farm, their own cows, sheep, turkeys, chickens and one year, pigs. They all had names, and every fall, they all went off and came back packaged and frozen... except one very lucky turkey, who ruled the roost for several years.
